Jean-Baptiste Fresez (* 10.Juli 1800 in Longwy, Frankreich; 31 März 1867) war der bedeutendste Maler Luxemburgs im 19. Jahrhundert. 1802 zog er mit seinen Eltern nach Luxemburg. Sein Vater arbeitete in der Porzellan-Manufaktur von Villeroy & Boch in Septfontaines. Fresez studierte Kunst an der Akademie der schönen Künste in Brüssel und arbeitete danach bei Villeroy & Boch in Mettlach. Nach dem Tode seines Vaters 1817 kehrte er nach Luxemburg zurück. 1848 nahm er die luxemburgische Staatsangehörigkeit an. Seine graphischen Hauptwerke sind sechs große Lithographien der Stadt Luxemburg, die 1828-29 in Brüssel erschienen, sowie sein 1857 in Luxemburg publiziertes "Album pittoresque du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg", das einen Kanon der touristischen Sehenswürdigkeiten Luxemburgs formte. Er war zudem ein beliebter Porträtmäler. Die Wertschätzung hat Georges Schmitt anläßlich einer Ausstellung der Werke von Nicolas Liez, eines seiner Schüler, treffend formuliert: "Depuis le début de son activité artistique en 1823, jusqu'à sa mort en 1867, J.-B. Fresez a été aux yeux de ses contemporains et compatriotes le maître incontesté de l'art à Luxembourg. Son exemple et son enseignement nous apparaissent aujourd'hui comme fondamentaux dans l'évolution de la peinture luxembourgeoise de la première moitié du 19e siècle."
