A mid-century ethnographic study of Asmat sculpture and ritual objects from southwest New Guinea, documenting masks, ceremonial paddles, ancestor figures, and carved wood sculpture. Black and white photographic plates throughout with detailed object descriptions and measurements. This copy retains its striking graphic wraparound cover design. The binding is beginning to separate at the top of the spine and is coming unglued at the head, but remains intact and complete. Interior pages are clean and sound. A solid reference copy with honest age wear. Strong appeal for collectors of tribal art, Oceanic art, anthropology, and tattoo and body modification history, as Asmat carving traditions are closely tied to ritual scarification and ceremonial culture.
