Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Knowing Women explores some of the most exciting and new developments in feminist theory, engaging the reader as an active participant in critical debates concerning the status of women as both objects and subjects of knowledge. The book introduces and reappraises key feminist questions concernin…g sex and gender, biology and the body, sexuality and motherhood. Various psychoanalytical perspectives are critically examined for the light they throw on the social and symbolic constructions of femininity. Later chapters explore theories of the subject and subjectivity, the place of language in the construction of social identities and the relation between discourse, power and knowledge. A concluding chapter focuses on the debate between feminism and post-modernism, stressing the political nature of the feminist project. The debates are presented in a way that will make them accessible to students. Introductions to each chapter lay out the main issues and introduce readings chosen for their clarity and accessibility. Ideal as an introductory textbook in feminism and women's studies, Knowing Women will also appeal to a wide readership interested in current debates in feminist theory. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Two years later, in 'The Tender Passion', Gay continued his eloquent, psycho-analytically informed exploration of the Victorian era & its middle classes. Whereas 'Education of the Senses' focused on the sexual attitudes & practices of the 19th-century bourgeoisie, 'The Tender Passion' concentrates on their notions of love. No less revisionist than he was in his first volume, Gay argues here that the Victorians were able not only to enjoy their sexuality but to know love in its most exalted sense. The realities of love for the Victorians, he shows, came much closer to their ideals than many have thought. Gay delves into a huge body of material, from philosophical treatises to medical texts, from letters & diaries to works of fiction. The book is replete w/ fascinating insights into the lives & works of individual Victorians (Dickens, Stendhal, Wagner, Oscar Wilde, Beatrice Potter & Sydney Webb, among them) & his discussions range from the "discovery" of homosexuality to the ways love was diverted or disguised in music & religion. Particularly compelling is the opening section in which Gay analyzes in depth the separate love stories of 2 young men, one English and one German, stories which, in Gay's view, "dramatize some of the careers in love open to the middle class in the decades of Victoria and beyond." A work of remarkable learning, analytical sophistication, and stylistic verve, 'The Tender Passion' is an impressive addition to a monumental historical enterprise. * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Peter Gay, Sterling Professor of History Emeritus at Yale University, is the author of many acclaimed books. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for our posted below-cost additional fee of $12.00 & to all international destinations via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL at our posted rates. Contact seller5-star sellerMagazine. Five different "household" periodicals, all in dreadful shape, dusty, edgeworn, all close to being self-disbound. We see no evidence of excisions, or of missing plates; the Peterson name attaches to one such, but it is not a "Peterson's Magazine", the famous competitor to Godey's Ladies Mag, both of which offered incre…dibly beautiful fullpage plates, often hand-colored. Nothing near so good here. Here we will briefly describe The Lady's Friend as it is one of two in least dire condition and does provide several impressive b&w fashion engravings; it is sewn, 10x6.5 inches, remnant of a titled spine panel present, original thread present but broken, badly edgeworn, ornate typography to contents and especially to the profuse advertisements, features sentimental fiction suitable for broads and tykes. In other words, the usual late-19thC victoriana. [+] "Our Young Folks An Illustrated Magazine for Boys and Girls," Number 33 September 1867 (has a couple of good Arctic exploration plates), [+] "Wood's Household Magazine" for July 1870. [+] "The Little Corporal, An Original Magazine for Boys and Girls and for Older People Who Have Young Hearts" Vol. XII No.6, June 1871 [+] "Arthur's Illustrated Home Magazine", May 1876 No. 5, Vol. XLIV. The five serials together as a lot: all the same size as the first described (or slightly smaller), all in very rough condition, all will disappoint collectors and intrigue readers with a stomach for this period of Americana.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book records privileged access to the unique and arduous experience of the delegation sent to visit various Indian Reservations in Nebraska undertaken in 1869 and led by the author. Through the detailed report produced by the group of Quakers, the reader is taken on a deeply perso…nal journey which gives insights into the hardships and struggles of the Native populations of the time. The author reveals the desperate material conditions and dire need for support in which these communities found themselves. The author perceived great potential in the Native people he met and showed a clear understanding of the considerable impact that the implementation of practical, humane policies could have on their lives. This book is a fascinating and moving account of an important historical moment and offers a valuable perspective on the development of US-Native relations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Contemporary Marbled Boards. Condition: Very Good. First Edition Thus. 1845 and 1843. [x], 58pp., 7pp.; 10pp, [iii], 19pp. This book contains two publications issued by Chappel Music for the Members of the Musical Antiquarian Society. The first of the two, issued in 1845, is Madrigals for Four Voices composed by John Bennet, sco…red from the original part books printed A.D. 1599 and edited by Edward J. Hopkins. The second, issued in 1843, is Fantasies in Three Parts Composed for Viols by Orlando Gibbons, scored from the copy printed in the Reign of James 1st and compared with the original M.S. by Edward F. Rimbault. Each piece of music is accpmpanied by details of the Council of the Musical Antiquarian Society; an introduction; and facsimiles of original title pages, etc. After the piece by Bennet is a Report of the Fourth A.G.M. of the Society, list of members, etc. The book is bound in contemporary marbled paper covered boards with a blue cloth spine and gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with expected shelf wear and a little damage and loss to the marbled paper around the corner tips. The spine ends are bumped with some damage and loss to the cloth. There is a split of about 1 1/2" to the cloth on the bottom of the front spine edge, the top 2" of the front spine edge and top 3/4" of the rear spine edge. The free endpapers are browned and there is foxing to the score by Bennet. This copy has come from the library of Arthur Henry Fox Strangways (1859-1948) the English musicologist, translator, editor and music critic, and his bookplate has been pasted onto the front fixed endpaper. PLEASE NOTE: This is a large and fairly heavy book and so a little extra may be needed for delivery outside the U.K.
