Earth First! is a group of radical environmentalists that formed in the American Southwest in the spring of 1980, founded by Dave Foreman, Mike Roselle, Howie Wolke, Bart Koehler, and Ron Kezar, among others. Earth First! quickly came to national attention with their "cracking" of Glen Canyon Dam activist stunt, which was performed and filmed in the spring of 1981. Edward Abbey is considered to be the "literary father" of the group. "Earth First! is the beginning of the new, bold environmental movement. And 'Earth First! The Radical Environmental Journal' is its voice. No compromise in the defense of Mother Earth!" (Dave Foreman, Editor). Rear cover half-page illustration is untitled by Brush Wolf and depicts a rattlesnake with a monkey wrench in place of the rattler at the end of the table. This issue of the long-running Anarc…hist underground newspaper out of Detroit, Michigan contains an article about Earth First! entitled "'Live Wild or Die' The Other EF!" by Randall Restless of Wild Rockies Earth First! in Bozeman, MT, on pages 10-12. This article is a response to criticisms of Earth First! previously printed in the pages of The Fifth Estate regarding the leadership style and direction of EF!, as well as some specific contemporary issues and perspectives that were surfacing from within Earth First! concerning immigration and border policy, the AIDS crisis, and so on. Other articles in this issue discuss the situation in Palestine, John Zerzan's critique of agriculture, and more.
