Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the lives of Samuel and Saul, two pivotal figures in the history of ancient Israel. Set against the backdrop of a chaotic time when judges ruled and Philistines posed a constant threat, the author traces their journeys from humble beginnings to positions of great inf…luence and responsibility. The book delves into the complexities of Samuel's role as a prophet, judge, and mentor to the young David, shedding light on his crucial role in shaping Israel's spiritual and political landscape. The rare original was written as a letter to Henry Ellis read December 13th, 1832; and, first published in 1834 as Dracontia or Observations On Circle and Serpent Worship. From John Bathurst Deane, author of: "The Worship of the Se…rpent Throughout the World - Attesting the Temptation and Fall of Man by the Instrumentality of a Serpent Tempter." In this treatise, Deane presented a full investigative and studied treatise into related patterns in cultures across the world. This is a letter or addendum to the highly illuminating 1833 study of snake worship, especially the serpent in the Book of Genesis that convinced Eve to eat of the fruit of 'The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil,' and then convinced Adam to do the same. A number of Gnostic texts and others referenced, expound on the idea of knowledge, and how the serpent gave this to humans. Deane includes mythical reptilian creatures such as dragons and the leviathan. The theme of this veneration is traced from Babylonia, East and West, through Persia, Hindûstan - Persian name for India, China, Mexico, Britain, Scandinavia, Italy, Illyricum - the western Balkans, Thrace, Greece, Asia Minor - Turkish, and Phoenicia - Lebanon area of the Levant. She set sail for China in the autumn of 1905 to take up a post as missionary for the Women's Association of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. In November… 1905 she reached the mission station in Fakumen, immediately taking up lessons in Mandarin. Upon her death from diptheria, a local Christian leader stated that 'Our doctor has given her life for us. For twelve years she has been at the call of any one who suffered. She was like a man in her strength, and rose at any hour of the night or day to help us. Her name is known and revered through all this country.'" - Wikipedia. "Composed chiefly of her private letters to her mother and her sister. These letters were not intended for publication. They are all the more revealing and intimate on that account. They tell, as no other narrative could do, the story of her eleven and a half years of pioneer service, by which from small beginnings she built up a great mission Hospital." - Editor's Note. Reprint of the 1917 first edition. [x]-xvii, [1], 19-222, [2] pp. Eight pages of marvelous black and white photographic plates. Map. Binding tight. No dust jacket, apparently as issued. Former library copy with usual markings to endpapers and backstrip mostly blackened in ink, otherwise clean and unmarked. Average wear to original decorated green cloth. A sound copy of this truly inspiring tribute.; Sm 8vo.

Add to basketHalf-Leather. Condition: Fine. First Edition Facsimile. Scarce facsimile of original edition. 1830 at title page. Title continued: "And Its Traditions Referred to the Events In Paradise: Proving the Temptation and Fall of Man by the Instrumentality of a Serpent Tempter." Marbled boards, light brown spine wrap and tooled corner,…light wear, bow. Sharp gilt spine titles on black fields with four raised bands. Marbled endpapers on thick textured stock. Pages near fine; few blemishes as from duplicated original. With a fine, light gold, satin ribbon page marker. Bind fine; hinges fully intact. A sharp facsimile of rare original first edition of this intriguing work. Rev. John Bathhurst Deane presents a full investigative and studied treatise into related patterns in cultures across the world. This is the highly illuminating 1830 study of serpent worship, especially in the Book of Genesis that convinced Eve to eat of the fruit from 'The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil,' and then convinced Adam to do the same. From preface: "The deception of Eve by Satan, through the instrumentality of a serpent has ever been an object of ridicule with the profane, who, reading without reflection, or reflecting without reading, deem that a 'foolishness,' which they cannot understand; and that 'a stumbling block,' which they cannot eplain away. Thus faith has been shaken, by an incredulous sneer, which had defied the sophistry of the acutest sceptic; and Christians, who would have scorned to be argued out of their religion, have not been ashamed to be laughed out of it." Next: "Preliminary Observations on the fall of man. That man, in his present state of ignorance, infirmity, and wickedness, is not the Adam of God's hand - the similitude of his Creator - the being which he was when God 'Breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, ' placed him in Paradise, and pronounced him 'good,' - is an observation not resulting from metaphysical research, but obvious to the most simple, unlettered mind." Chap. I. Serpent-Worship in Asia. The worship of the serpent is supposed by Bryant to have commenced in Chaldea; and to have been 'the first variation from the purer Zabaism.' A number of Gnostic texts and others referenced, expound on the idea of knowledge, and how the serpent gave this to humans. Lady Charnwood, who presented this book to Nottingham University, was instrumental in jump starting what became Aston Martin motor cars as Bamford & Martin which was going bankrupt in the early twenties. In 1924 she acquired the fledgling brand and put her son John Benson on the board. Bamford & Martin got into financial difficulty again in 1925 and Martin was forced to sell the company.
