Paperback. Condition: New. In the online universe of bloggers, a group of women coalesced around their common work as pastors. Many of them were pioneers - they'd left the denominations of their childhoods to follow Jesus; they'd taken risks and talked about that story in the news no one wanted to hear connected to the Gospel; they'd been the first woman to serve a church or the first mum. Deep relationships formed in the writing and sharing of their stories of ministry in the pulpit, through the sacraments, outside the church walls, in their homes, in holy moments and at times when they wondered why they don't teach plumbing in seminary. This collection captures and expands that fierce and faithful bond, offering insight into the lives of Christian clergywomen and the rigours that come with commitment to religious life. Over fifty contributors represent fourteen denominations, as well as dozens of seminaries and colleges. They come from twenty-five US states as well as Canada and the United Kingdom. Their churches are large and small, liturgical and not, urban and rural. They serve as chaplains, in specialised ministries and through their writing. Their backgrounds are as diverse as their approaches to ministry - single, married, divorced, widowed; some in clergy couples; gay and straight, bi- and transgender; parents and not; ranging in ages from 20-something to 70-something.Intended for laypeople, women discerning a call to ministry and clergy of all levels of experience, these stories and prayers will resonate, challenge, inform, inspire and amuse anyone who has a passion for the work and the faith that they love.

First Edition
Stapled Wraps. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Please note: this sermon is *not* reprinted in the Rev. Fritchman's posthumous collection of sermons and addresses entitled "For the Sake of Clarity." Offered is a Sermon and an Address upon the occasion of the Dedication of the Hugh Hardyman Center on October 21, 1962: "Speechless on Sunday," a Sermon by the Rev. Stephen H. Fritchman, and "A Symbol of Our Faith," an Address by Howard W. Oliver, Church School Director, published in mimeographed print form as the December 1962 Sermon of the Month by the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles. A stapled pamphlet measuring 7" by 8-1/2" and containing 16 pages including front and rear covers. Two brief excerpts from the Rev. Fritchman's seven-page Sermon: "This is a day of joy and pride, of great memories and greater expectations. For the first time in thirty-five years we dedicate a new building for the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles. Since 1877 the Unitarians of this city have been active as a center of liberal religion and as their numbers increased they have known the satisfaction of moving from building to building as both the church and the city grew far beyond all dreams of the early settlers" - "To our distinguished guests and to all members and friends I would say this morning that we now are opening a new building to be known as the Hugh Hardyman Center. This act will inevitably and properly start a fresh chapter in our record as a liberal church in Los Angeles." Mr. Oliver's two-page address begins, "In a time when downtown churches in large cities all over the country are following the herd to the split level conformity of suburbia, this church, with characteristic disregard for the comforts of the easy way, has chosen to stay where it is - in the center of town." Also in this pamphlet is the two-page "The Unitarian Universalist Association" ("The following is an excerpt from 'The Free Church in a Changing World,' from the findings of Commission III on 'Education and Liberal Religion,' and has been chosen for reprint here by Mr. Howard W. Oliver, Church School Director"). Light crease to pamphlet. The REVEREND STEPHEN H. [HOLE] FRITCHMAN (1902-1981), author, liberal humanist, and social and antiwar activist, was the minister of the progressive First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, California, from 1948 to 1969.
