Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Reprint. Clean and nice with light cover spotting. ; In Latin. "With notes and introductions intended for the higher forms of public schools by the Rev. A. Sloman." 2nd edition, revised. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 176 pages.
Decorative Cloth. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. This 128-page, 4 1/2" X 6 1/2" offering in G condition is Adelphi by Terence, with Notes and Introductions by Rev. A. Sloman, published by The Clarendon Press, at Oxford, in 1936. Not an ex-library copy, this offering has seen a great deal of use in between its birth in England until its alighting in Ohio. Its front loose end page is missing, there is modest yellowing of the endpapers front and back as well as the pages of text, noticeable shelf wear is visible down the length of volume's spine as well as along bottom edge of front cover board, and a previous owner/student has very neatly printed her name, in white letters, across part of the top, inside edge of the back cover board. ALSO, there are copious notes, the vast majority of which seem to be done in pencil, throughout most of the play part of the text. The PLAY ITSELF, which is PRINTED IN LATIN, is executed in five Acts, and revolves around the "battle" between the child-rearing philosophies of two brothers, Micio and Demea. Micio believes that the fullest liberty possible should be accorded a child while they're growing up, that being the only way to gain the confidence and love of said child. Demea, in contrast, believes that the most rigid discipline possible is the path to producing a young adult ready to assume the duties and responsibilities of maintaining an ordered, law-abiding society. You can probably deduce the outcome of the brothers' labors in child-rearing, but you might want to look into this slender offering to see if you're correct. THE REAL STARS of this volume are Rev. Sloman's Introduction, which is actually a meticulously researched, incredibly detailed, yet relatively brief history of the Roman Theater from its earliest known origins, including a bio of our play's author, Terence, and the Reverend's Notes, covering each scene in each act, which, in the same patient detail, interpret and explain what's happening. Terence, by the way, was Greek-born, was captured and became a Roman slave, only to be eventually granted his freedom due to his proclivity for scholarly learning, and a clever, but always respectful, tongue.Thank you very much!!
