Hardcover. Condition: Good. Second edition. vi, 314, 15-36 (ads) pp. Publisher's blindstamped read cloth with spine titled in gilt. Large, older (but likely not contemporary) Brooklyn bookstore stamp on front fly. Binding worn and soiled with loss at the spine ends, endleaves foxed and some very occasional modest foxing in the text, margins toned, and a very small foredge stain affecting the foredge margins only a trifling bit, a sound, good only copy. The author's attempt to refute Harriet Beecher Stowe's *Uncle Tom's Cabin*, with chapters titled "Inconsistencies and Improbabilities of the Story" and "Irreligious Tendency of the Work," along with more general chapter headings dealing with the slave trade, conditions in Africa, religion, etc. The author, thoroughly salty over the publication and success of *Uncle Tom's Cabin*, writes that while he has "throughout endeavoured to treat [Stowe] with the respect due to a woman, I have occasionally found it hard work. ." According to him, Stowe's book "stirred up more bad bile in twelve months, than can be settled in as many years." The author was formerly a professor at St. John's College, Maryland. Ignorant; relatively uncommon.

A bit of spotting to endpapers; binding slightly loose but secure for normal handling. Text clean. A refutation of a popular book by the Catholic Archbishop of Baltimore that defended Catholic teaching authority on the interpretation of Scripture. The author was an Episcopal clergyman from Easton, Maryland. He uses biblically-based arguments to respond to the Catholic publication, as he did in a previous work defending slavery and refuting Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Includes a handwritten letter signed by the author to a Dr. Harrison. The letter, dated October 23rd, 1885, states that the author wishes to attend an event and help Dr. Harrison if he can, but that he may be inhibited by poor health.
