First Edition
First Dutch edition (same year as the Paris, Rollin fils, original) Original 1734 first Dutch edition of this landmark history of Spain from the fall of the Visigoths to the union of Castile and Aragon, published in the same year as the Paris original (Rollin fils). Volume IV (Tome Quatrième) only, of a four-volume set. Title page printed in red and black with engraved publisher's vignette ("Erudit et Ditat"). Text in French. Exceptional provenance: two 18th-century ownership inscriptions. Front pastedown bears the printed ownership label of "Mr. le Comte de Preston" alongside a manuscript shelf number. The title page verso carries the ex libris inscription in manuscript: "Ex Libris Johannis Natalis Paquot Florinenfis" ? Jean-Noël Paquot (1722-1803), the distinguished Belgian bibliographer and author of the Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire littéraire des dix-sept provinces des Pays-Bas, a renowned figure in the Republic of Letters. A manuscript number "12336" appears at the top of the front pastedown, consistent with a private library catalogue. Binding: contemporary leather, covers sound. Front board is slightly detached but holding; spine intact. Interior pages clean and legible. A single-volume copy from a distinguished 18th-century scholarly library.
