Book
Paperback. Winner, Montana New Zealand Book Awards, 2003 (Non-Fiction: Reference & Anthology Section) SPIRIT IN A STRANGE LAND is the first-ever collection of poetry that focuses on a rich vein in New Zealand writing: our spiritual experience. Religious poetry has always been evident in anthologies, but by expanding the notion of relgion beyond a narrow doctrinal frame and the portals of the church, a surprising abdundance of treasures is revealed. This collection is religiously, spirtually, historically and culturally diverse, reflecting the mutliplicity of our spiritualities. Inscription on half title.

Pp. 60+[4](last colophon), publisher's large device on title page printed in red; roy. 8vo; white buckram, spine lettered in gilt, boards decorated in gilt with a striking Art Deco design by Ricketts, cloth faintly soiled, spine slightly darkened and a trifle frayed at foot; uncut, the top edges gilt on the rough; lacking the dust wrapper; upper hinge tender, free endpapers offset, the text block faintly browned and occasionally slightly soiled; The Nonesuch Press, London, 1932. Edition limited to 800 numbered copies, printed by Geo. W. Jones at the Dolphin Press. McKitterick 81. *From the library of David Levine, Sydney, with his book label above the earlier bookplate of 'Eddie' on the upper pastedown. In his introductory note, Thomas Lowinsky explains that 'Jean Paul Raymond' was previously used by Ricketts in 1929 in Beyond the Threshold. In the present volume Ricketts 'introduces this imaginary author into his own recollections of Oscar Wilde. Although the setting is invented the episodes and conversations were conscientiously taken from the diaries and letters that he had kept. By this artifice Ricketts created a sympathetic audience for his words of passionate indignation at the fate of his friend' [p. 7].

Book First Edition
First edition, one of 150 copies only; large 8vo (268 x 175 mm.); 5 plates by Charles Ricketts, internally very good; original burgundy morocco, elaborately ruled & blocked in gilt to a design by Ricketts, with his monogram to the foot of upper & lower panel, a little rubbed at spine-ends, but really an exceptional copy, top edge gilt, others uncut. A volume of imaginary dialogues between the dead, including Oscar Wilde, Voltaire, St Augustine, Plato and Nietzsche. The book was written by Ricketts under his pseudonym of Jean Paul Raymond, a device Ricketts again brought to bear in his Recollections of Oscar Wilde (Nonesuch Press, 1932), in which although the setting is contrived the episodes and conversations therein were drawn from the diaries and letters that he had kept. John Russell Taylor has remarked on the mysterious quality of the later book-cover designs by Ricketts, suggesting the possibility of a private symbolism.
