Blind and Gilt Stamped Cloth. Condition: Fair. Gustave de Ridder probably (illustrator). A scarce concertina, although some of the same images can be found in other leporellos or concertinas of around the same date, and we ourselves have a very similar concertina -- a title slightly different, with a different publisher and/or printer. No illustrator is credited, but Gustave de Ridder did such illustrations for Martinet and we are of the mind he was probably responsible for these. We also are hesitant to make a determination as to edition, since Martinet did Garde Imperiale concertinas with earlier years in the title. Closed, 17 by 11.5 cm. With 24 costume panels or plates, all tinted and then partially hand-colored. Fourteen show a single officer on horseback, and ten, show two officers or military characters (since two shown are cantinieres -- the women who ran the canteen -- and we don't know whether they had an official status). The costumes were often colorful, and the rich hand-coloring applied here to these costumes captures the beauty of these uniforms. Included among the 30 models are the more exotic military types such as Zouaves as well. All the illustrations have sketchier backgrounds, with a brown tinting set off with lighter coloring -- mostly green, and things such as buildings and natural scenery suggested with light vague outlines. The red cloth folder looks rough. Along the front joint the cloth has disintegrated, with a long tear and conspicuous fraying. The front board has long blister lines that look like cracks. The spine is sunned. The gilt lettering and armorial centerpiece look drab. The panels have heavy soiling. The uniforms do come through with bright colors, but the overall impression is of grubbiness.
