Based on Jean Webster's 1912 novel. Millionaire Jervis Pendleton III (Astaire) is the unknown benefactor of French orphan girl Julie (Caron), financing the girl's education. Moved by Julie's letters of thanks, Pendleton's secretary Alicia (Ritter) advises him to go to France to visit the orphan. When he arrives, he finds that Julie is almost a grown woman, and the two fall in love. Set in France, shot on location in New York. Nominated for 3 Academy Awards. 8 x 10 inches. Inhalt: Rip Van Winkle ist eine Erzählung des amerikanischen Schriftstellers Washington Irving (1783-1859), die 1819 im Rahmen seines Skizzenbuchs erschien. Neben der Sage von der schläfrigen Schlucht aus demselben Band gilt sie als erste Kurzgeschichte der amerikanischen Literatur und ist bis heute eine der bekanntesten. Angelehnt an eine deutsche Sage, erzählt sie die Geschichte des Bauern Rip Van Winkle, der zur englischen Kolonialzeit in den Bergen New Yorks in einen Zauberschlaf fällt, erst nach zwanzig Jahren wieder aufwacht und feststellt, dass er nun nicht mehr Untertan des englischen Königs, sondern Bürger der Vereinigten Staaten ist.
