Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Leo & Diane Dillon (illustrator). 1st Edition. This is an almost universally admired picture book (take a look at the Amazon reviews) both for the simple, rhyming verse of the text and especially for the wonderful illustrations by the much lauded Dillons. In the best tradition of sympathetic illustration, the pictures here do more than visualize the words; they expand the meaning of the text, enlarge upon it, add depth and nuance to it. And the multi-cultural aspect of the book is just beautifully handled - through illustration and through the translation of the verses into other languages, other alphabets. A fine book, content-wise. Condition-wise, it's a near fine copy of the first printing. Every extremity is slightly bumped, and this affects the very tips of the top corners of the textblock. Otherwise a fine copy in a very good dust jacket, slightly curled on top edge and just a little nicked to top of spine.
