With a unique literary association to the New England coastal village of Castine, Maine where Robert Lowell inherited a house and summered for 15 years from 1955 to 1970 with his wife, writer Elizabeth Hardwick. Robert Lowell (1917-1977) American Poet, twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and celebrated as America's most famous living poet. He taught such luminaries as W. D. Snodgrass, Anne Sexton, and Sylvia Plath. He set his famous poem "Skunk Hour" in Castine. The Old Glory consists of three plays adapted from works by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville and reflect the political turmoil of the 1960s. Signed by Author(s).

Simple signature, obtained - according to a pencil note on the front end paper - '1972 signed by RL at Essex University'. First Edition, 1951. Bound in black cloth, green and lime yellow dustwrapper. Lowell's third book, following Lord Weary's Castle and Land Of Unlikeness. This copy is not price clipped but the jacket, which is now protected, is well used. The black binding is firm, and the text block is tanned, like most copies I'm afraid, because of the poor quality paper. Rare signature. It is clean and tight and the jacket is protected. Two minor faults; there is a former owner's blind stamp, which is very neat, on the half title page, and the jacket is price clipped. But I must emphasise, this is a clean and tight first edition hardback SIGNED by the great poet. Signed by Author.
