Hardcover. Condition: Very Good -. B/W Photograph (frontispiece) (illustrator). First Edition. A verbose line under the title explains that these approx. 290 pages (UNpaginated) bring tother all the issues of the WWI trench magazine. For the UNinitiated, Wipers was soldier talk for Ypres. Censorshop rules meant that all entries were made in coded language. The magazines mandate was toamuse , so humour abounds. For instance, a lectire is advertised fir Town Hall, Plug Street, on page 91 - it is to be give by Mrs. Intha Pink. Later there is a Mesopotamian Alphabet that offers thar `P' os for Postal officials who each week fail to deliver more than half our mail. A serious notice notes the departure of Mobbs, Compton and De La LFontaine. It means, but doesn't say : Deaths. READ more about : Dead Cow Theatre, zizzler, Red Cross badge, Cockles Tumley, Somme-Times, and Messines district. All tongue in cheek. Cond : Boards are brown with black lettering. White end-papers. No dust jaclet Sound in binding. No names nor marks. Light general soiling. Spine band is VERY loose. QUote (p. 23) : " Thus we find that there are 16 men on the Western Front. This number I maintain is not enough to give them even a fair chance of resisting four more big pushes and hence ._._._. . " Size: Quarto.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Couzens, E J (illustrator). 1st Edition. 1918 1st edition. Unpaginated. Good/None. Hard green boards with some rubbing/chipping to edges/spine, splitting to front edge of spine - stuck down, minor scuffing/soiling, label mark to back. Contents generally clean and tight but for minor soiling, tanning to pages. B&W illustrations and decorations. The first edition reprinting, issued in 1918, of the initial 15 issues of the WWI trench magazine, most commonly known as the 'Wiper's Times'. It was written in a humorously ironic style and contained a mixture of poetry, in-jokes, spoof adverts, lampoons of the military situation, reflections on the war and life in the trenches and gallows humour, all submitted by British soldiers. The magazine was produced by soldiers fighting on the Ypres Salient. In 1916 the 12th Battalion of Sherwood Foresters came across an abandoned printing press which still worked. The magazine was first issued on 12th February 1916 in a run of 100 copies. A total of 22 issues were published until February 1918, with a further 2 late in 1918. The magazine changed its name a number of times from the 'Wipers Times' to the 'BEF (British Expeditionary Forces) Times', to the 'New Church Times', to the 'Kemmel Times', to the 'Somme Times'. The two later editions published after the war were called the 'Better Times'. (Kemmel refers to a Kemmel Hill a key point in the Somme area). The magazines had two editors, Captain Frederick Roberts MC, and Lieutenant John Pearson. Other important contributors included the British novelist Gilbert Frankau, and engraver E J Couzens. Many other individuals contributed but largely under pseudonyms. A fascinating insight into life in the trenches of WWI.

Typographical embellishments. 8vo. 9-3/4" x 7-1/4" "In early 1916, the 12th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters, was stationed in the front line at Ypres, Belgium, and came across a printing press abandoned by a Belgian who had, in the words of the editor, "stood not on the order of his going, but gone." A sergeant who had been a printer in peacetime salvaged it and printed a sample page. The Wiper Times itself was named after Tommy slang pronunciation of Ypres." The title of the paper changed as did the location of the publishers. the Somme-Times said to have come from sitting in the middle of this famous battle, editing the paper. [Wiki / from the preface, The WIPER TIMES, London, 1918]. Publication of these trench magazines was held up after February 1918 by the German offensive on the western front in that year, but at the end of the War two issues of "The Better Times" were published. The second of these was billed as the "Xmas, Peace and Final Number." [Wiki]. All issues replete with war time humor, irony & satire and serve as an example WWI British soldiers attempting to find distraction from a tedious campaign. Uncommon in the trade.
