Ends of spine worn- crown fraying at upper front joint. Moderate rubbing over surface. Binding square though slightly loosened at both hinges.Text block foxed. Gilt top edge marked by several thin scratches.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Measures approximately 7.75 x 10 inches. Previously owned and in good to very good condition. Includes all 28 color plates. Salesman's sample has specimen sheets of text but does not include the text for the fables. Publisher's adverts are laid on the inside front cover. Sample spine is laid on the back cover and is in excellent condition--could possibly be used in rebacking an original. Unusual to be issued with all the plates. Boards are covered in red linen with gold lettering and illustrations. No printing on the spine. Boards are in good to very good condition with gently bent and slightly fraying board corners and moderate soiling. Spine is tight but has the beginning of some splitting. Page ends are gilt. Pages are largely clean with a couple of smudges. No rips or bends. No foxing. Illustrations are in full-color and are in excellent condition.

Special illustrated edition (ND). Bound in sturdy red cloth with with delightful gilded animals and floral designs on the frlont boards and on the spine. Top edges gilt.The binding is shaken and somewhat worn with chipping and wear to the top and bottom of the spine ends and at the corners. Name and date, Christmas, 1917 on the second free front endpaper. Lovely silhouette animal endpapers. While all the plates are present and in good condition, the hinges have been reglued and there is considerable wear along the spine ends and at the gutters where it hs been reglued as well. This copy is something of a wounded bird with the lovely Charles Robinson plates. Charles Robinson(18701937) was a prolific British bookillustrator. Born inIslingtonin October 1870, London,[1][2]he was the son of illustrator Thomas Robinson, and his brothersThomas Heath RobinsonandWilliam Heath Robinsonalso became illustrators.[3]He served an apprenticeship as aprinterand took art lessons in the evenings. He won a place at theRoyal Academyin 1892 but was unable to take it up due to lack of finances.The first full book he illustrated wasRobert Louis Stevenson'sA Child's Garden of Verses(1895) which includes over 100 pen and ink drawings. It was extremely popular, going through many reprints, and generated numerous commissions. He illustrated manyfairy talesand children's books throughout his career, includingEugene Field'sLullaby Land(1897),W. E. Cule'sChild Voices(1899),Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué'sSintram and His Companions(1900),Alice's Adventures in Wonderland(1907),Grimm's Fairy Tales(1910),Frances Hodgson Burnett'sThe Secret Garden(1911), and books written by Walter Copeland Jerrold and himself.He was also an activepainter, especially in later life, and was elected to theRoyal Institute of Painters in Water Coloursin 1932. FIRST EDITION 1912 (dated on title page), small thick 4to, 250 x 190 mm, 10 x 7 inches, pale cream cloth, gilt illustration and lettering to upper cover and spine, top edges gilt, the others untrimmed, plain white endpapers, pages: xxi, (3), 1-294. Title page printed red and black, 28 tissue guarded mounted colour plates of which the frontispiece and 9 others are in full colour, the rest are tinted in shades of blue, pink and green, numerous enchanting black and white full page and text illustrations. Spine slightly darkened, minute nick at tail of spine, 5 mm (¼") nick to cloth on upper hinge, minute dark mark at tail of spine, gilt slightly rubbed on spine, 1 or 2 very minor pale marks to cloth, deckled edges lightly foxed, neat inscription dated Xmas 1919 on front endpaper, very slight foxing to margin of title page, very occasional very light foxing within, mainly at page edges, tiny lower corner crease to plate page 40.
