" La femme Ouolove adulte est remarquable par sa taille élevée. La moyenne de nos mensurations s'élève à 1,625 m ; en évaluant cette même moyenne à 1,530 m pour l'Européenne, une différence notable existe en faveur de la première. Le front large, relativement haut ; les yeux grands, un peu saillants, à sclérotique d'un jaune azuré ; le nez droit, bien que légèrement épaté au niveau des narines ; la bouche petite, à lèvres charnues, mais non proéminentes ; le menton court, faiblement relevé en avant ; les pommettes peu accusées ; les joues pleines, d'un ovale assez allongé et d'un noir d'ébène à reflets bleuâtres, forment un ensemble qui a fait généralement considérer à juste titre les Ouoloves comme les plus belles parmi les négresses. " (page 2). Outre des descriptions détaillées de la morphologie de la femme Ouolove, Rochebrune s'applique à relever des caractéristiques physiologiques et à les expliquer par des causes ethnographiques. Par exemple, l'auteur affirme que la carie est fréquente chez les Ouoloves, et en particulier chez la femme, car ils sont friands de sucrerie ainsi que, chez les femmes, du tabac. " préparé avec de la chaux et fumé dans de petites pipes ". (page 5) De même pour la forme des pieds qu'il explique par la composition de la sandale portée par les " indigènes du Sénégal " : " or, dans le sable toujours mouvant, ce pied est constamment sollicité à chercher un point d'appui qui lui échappe, et à se plier en quelque sorte à la mobilité du sol ; c'est la semelle large et plate du chameau, si l'on peut établir une comparaison avec un quadrupède habitant les mêmes régions, c'est en un mot un résultat de l'adaptation sous l'influence du milieu et rien de plus. " (page 7). L'auteur achève son étude par des considérations d'ordre intellectuel et moral : " nous constaterons seulement avec M. le général Faidherbe que le Ouolof possède en général une intelligence comparable à celle de bien des races blanches. "S'il manque souvent de forces de volonté, de prévoyance, de persévérance" il ne faut pas en attribuer la cause avec M. le Dr Béranger-Féraud à sa capacité intellectuelle infantile, mais à l'influence active et tenace de l'homme blanc, souvent, trop souvent coupable envers l'homme noir [.]. Comme M. le Dr Béranger-Féraud nous avons vécu parmi les nègres de la Sénégambie, nous n'y avons pas vu "d'êtres réellement inférieurs" ; nous n'avons surtout jamais éprouvé "le besoin de les tuer tous pour n'avoir plus affaire à eux". Nous ne venons pas défendre le nègre avec des larmes dans la voix ; nous savons qu'il a des défauts, des vices même, nous savons qu'il est paresseux, voleur, lubrique, mais nous savons aussi qu'il a des qualités, celles entre autres de la reconnaissance et de dévouement, qualités que beaucoup de représentants des races supérieures oublient trop souvent dans le climat du Sénégal. " (page 35).
