Paperback. Condition: Good. Are there lessons to be learned from life's final journey? As people approach their final days of life, can they and their families find peace and hope? Life Lessons from the Dying provides proof they can. Author Ronald C. Daniel, who had the privilege of ministering to hundreds of terminally ill patients, their families, and their friends as a hospice chaplain, shares a collection of impactful stories from the people he served at the end of their life. Some of their stories evoke laughter, and others, tears. Some will be uplifting, while others may result in deep contemplation. All of them offer a new perspective on approaching death, and each one teaches a different lesson about the end of life, providing proof there can be peace and comfort.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. This book is a short treatment of a long history. Nebraska has been inundated by ancient seas, carved by glaciers, and settled by ancient cultures who learned to survive in a land prone to extremes of climate. As a state, Nebraska was born out of the Civil War, shaped by railroads, and built by immigrants. Settlers were drawn by promises of free land and abundant rain. They endured droughts and economic depressions. They fought for political reforms, fought world wars, and sometimes fought each other. Along the way Nebraskans chose a unique form of government and re-invented their communities under new conditions. A Brief History of Nebraska is a story of continual change, the back story of the place and people we know today.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. The battles and political scheming that took place during the medieval crusades have often been described, but little has been written about crusading from the point of view of the actual participants. This refreshingly different book redresses this situation by asking what inspired those recruits who marched across Europe and fought the 'infidel', as well as those they actually fought against. What did it feel like to be a crusader? How did the long marches, bad food and lack of medicine affect the average armed pilgrim? Were the original ideas sustained in the face of the perils of the journey? What image of the enemy did each side carry into battle? Drawing on a wide variety of sources, Ronald C. Finucane also discusses such matters as the social composition of the fighting forces, the role of women in the crusades, the part played by superstitious ideas, supernatural omens, and the conduct of both Christian and Moslem soldiers on and off the field of battle. Similarities and differences between the two religions, especially from the viewpoint of the 'average' believer, are also examined.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. An intimate character portrait and fascinating inquiry into the basis of Lincoln's energetic, curious mind.--The Wall Street Journal WINNER OF THE BARONDESS/LINCOLN AWARD - From the New York Times bestselling author of A. Lincoln and American Ulysses, a revelatory glimpse into the intellectual journey of our sixteenth president through his private notes to himself, explored together here for the first time A deeply private man, shut off even to those who worked closely with him, Abraham Lincoln often captured his best thoughts, as he called them, in short notes to himself. He would work out his personal stances on the biggest issues of the day, never expecting anyone to see these frank, unpolished pieces of writing, which he'd then keep close at hand, in desk drawers and even in his top hat. The profound importance of these notes has been overlooked, because the originals are scattered across several different archives and have never before been brought together and examined as a coherent whole. Now, renowned Lincoln historian Ronald C. White walks readers through twelve of Lincoln's most important private notes, showcasing our greatest president's brilliance and empathy, but also his very human anxieties and ambitions. We look over Lincoln's shoulder as he grapples with the problem of slavery, attempting to find convincing rebuttals to those who supported the evil institution (As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy.); prepares for his historic debates with Stephen Douglas; expresses his private feelings after a defeated bid for a Senate seat (With me, the race of ambition has been a failure--a flat failure); voices his concerns about the new Republican Party's long-term prospects; develops an argument for national unity amidst a secession crisis that would ultimately rend the nation in two; and, for a president many have viewed as not religious, develops a sophisticated theological reflection in the midst of the Civil War (it is quite possible that God's purpose is something different from the purpose of either party). Additionally, in a historic first, all 111 Lincoln notes are transcribed in the appendix, a gift to scholars and Lincoln buffs alike. These are notes Lincoln never expected anyone to read, put into context by a writer who has spent his career studying Lincoln's life and words. The result is a rare glimpse into the mind and soul of one of our nation's most important figures.…

Condition: Very Good. What is a tangram? It is more easily seen and understood than defined in words. But to put it briefly, it is a geometric dissection puzzle in which seven standard pieces (five triangles, one square, one rhomboid) are used to make images of various objects. The origin of the name is not known, but the game itself is of Chinese origin, and for centuries it has been one of the most popular diversions in the Orient. The tangram is not entirely new to America, since Yankee sea captains brought books of tangram puzzles back from Canton and Shanghai. Edgar Allan Poe was a devotee, while on the other side of the world Napoleon is said to have whiled away his time with them. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the two great modern puzzlers, H. E. Dudeney and Sam Loyd, greatly enlarged the traditional field of tangram situations. This collection gathers together nearly 330 tangrams, the best creations of both Chinese and Occidental puzzle devisers. Included are some of the most striking Oriental puzzles, carefully selected from rare nineteenth-century books and some of the most inventive and imaginative inventions of Loyd and Dudeney. Although individual tangrams have always been favorite members of most collections of mathematical amusements, to our knowledge this is the first book devoted entirely to this popular form in many decades. Some of the tangrams in this collection are relatively easy and can be solved without too much brain-straining. Others are difficult, and many demand quite a bit of mental sweat before they are resolved. All, however, are delightful concoctions in recreational form-perception and will provide many hours of pleasure.…

Paperback. Condition: Fair. As the day for Lincoln's second inauguration drew near, Americans wondered what their sixteenth president would say about the Civil War. Would Lincoln guide the nation toward Reconstruction? What about the slaves? They had been emancipated, but what about the matter of suffrage? When Lincoln finally stood before his fellow countrymen on March 4, 1865, and had only 703 words to share, the American public was stunned. The President had not offered the North a victory speech, nor did he excoriate the South for the sin of slavery. Instead, he called the whole country guilty of the sin and pleaded for reconciliation and unity. In this compelling account, noted historian Ronald C. White Jr. shows how Lincoln's speech was initially greeted with confusion and hostility by many in the Union; commended by the legions of African Americans in attendance, abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass among them; and ultimately appropriated by his assassin John Wilkes Booth forty-one days later. Filled with all the facts and factors surrounding the Second Inaugural, Lincoln's Greatest Speech is both an important historical document and a thoughtful analysis of Lincoln's moral and rhetorical genius.…
