In response to the Women's Movement, Phillip Morris, maker of Virginia Slims cigarettes, began conducting surveys in 1970 which collected data on the changing role(s) and values of American women. The surveys were conducted in 1970, 1972, 1974, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, and 2000. This is the third volumethe 1974 poll published in 1975. While the majority of the data centers topics surrounding (heterosexual) marriage, other topics include childrearing, gender roles and stereotypes, the sexual liberation of women, and the ranking of public figures in terms of respectability. Despite the unlikely sponsor of these polls, the data presents an intriguing document of the evolution of public opinion regarding sex and gender. .
