Leather. Condition: Very Good Indeed. W. M. R. Quick (illustrator). A smart limited edition copy of what is considered to be one of the worst novels ever published, an illustrated edition published by the Nonesuch Press. A limited edition of 1,250 copies, of which this is numbered 99.Generally considered to be one of the worst novels ever published, 'Irene Iddesleigh' follows a noblewoman who has an affair with her tutor. When first published, figures such as Mark Twain publicly denounced its purple prose and poorly-constructed plot, with Twain dubbing it "one of the greatest unintentionally humorous novels of all time".The author, Amanda McKittrick Ros, wrote and published this novel at her own expense in 1897, a gift to her husband to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary.Illustrated with a frontispiece and two plates, by W. M. R. Quick.Collated, complete. From the library of George Engle, gifted to him by his friend Brian Spiller, with a presentation bookplate to the front paste down. Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Although 1,000 copies of this book of unnecessary poetry were reportedly printed, this would appear to be one of only 100 of the "first state" of "Fumes of Formation" bound with rounded spine (an additional 60 with "square spines" having been bound up from remaining sheets found in the author's house.) This one carries a "fair" original dust jacket which is missing the top half of its rear panel. While Ros -- who never let a single word stand where she could string together three alliterative terms to confuse her meaning -- has long been accepted as not only Ireland's worst author (The Inklings held competitions to see who could read Ros' work aloud for the longest time without laughing out loud), but the worst author ever to have written in English, the honor of "worst poet" has long been awarded to Dundee hand-weaver William McGonagall ("The Tay Bridge Disaster.") As she inverts and mangles her sentence order to find that perfect, clunking rhyme, surely Mrs. Ross' poetry ("Ros" having been her clever pen name) is worthy of some reconsideration. 44 pp.

Taylor defined it as 'endearing.'Inscribed to the half title page 'C. Joan Allen, the gift of the Publishers.' Illustrated with a frontispiece and two wood engravings by W. M. R. Quick.
