pamphlet. Condition: Good. Privately published, 1866. Pamphlet (string-bound), 15 pp. Copy of letter written by W. S. Rosecrans to Hon. Horace Greeley in which Rosecrans staunchly defends his actions taken with respect to the Army of the Cumberland and the battle of Chicamauga. The letter is made in response to a "great injustice" that had been done to Rosecrans by the press of the Eastern States, specifically the New York Tribune. Notably, Rosecrans places blame on his superiors for failure to give proper support the the Army of The Cumberland, claiming that General Grant's army "neither came to our support, nor prevented Joe Johnson from reinforcing Bragg with nearly all his command". In addition, he defends his decision to remove to Chattanooga on the second day of battle and calls the various "complaints" that he was "demoralized" or that he about to abandon Chattanooga as "Calumnious." He provides a detailed version of his account of what happened after the "gap made by the untimely removal of Wood's Division from the line" and his decision to back to Chattanooga. In good condition. Pamphlet has a few small nicks and tears and creasing to edges. Pages are lightly aged. Page 8 has a hand written correction. Otherwise pages are unmarked. NOT Ex-library. An interesting piece of Civil War History.
