The translations begin with two selections from The Fifteen joys of Marriage, a delightful fifteenth~century work which exposes the sufferings of men in marriage. The Cholakians have brilliantly rendered the dramatic and witty dialogue that characterize these stories. An extract from Antoine de La Sale's Petit Jehan de Saintre follows. While this work itself is technically not a novella, the selection, which stands quite neatly by itself, fits such a description. Furthermore, that section of the story departs from the earlier chivalric tone and takes on the realistic coloration typical of the more middle~class novella. Stories from two different Cent Nouvelles nouvelles, one anonymous, the other by Philippe de Vigneulles, gives examples of French tales similar in theme and mode to those found in the Decameron. Whatever their actual relation to this Italian work, the French stories have a distinctly local flavor. The selections from Nicolas de Troyes's Le Grand Parangon and Noel du Fail's Baliverneries are typical anecdotal works, though "The Spell of the Ring" does include an uncharacteristic supernatural element, but both authors show somewhat more interest in their characters than in the plot development that is the primary focus of the Cent Nouvelles nouvelles. The selections from Bonaventure des Periers are again anecdotal, but his collection is more marked by a stylistic unity and his dialogue is real and immediate. In general, these novellas, intend only to entertain, not to instruct; the works are meant to be lighthearted. Marguerite de Navarre's Heptameron, while sharing many characteristics of the foregoing works, reaches a greater moral and psychological depth both in the stories themselves and through the narrators' commentaries, for the stories are, in part, springboards to these ethical discussions. A couple of the Heptameron stories appear to have their origins in actual events, an aspect of the novella Marguerite considered more than conventionally important. The translators have skillfully rendered into English the distinctive styles of the various works, the more aristocratic tone of the Heptameron stories or Le Petit Jehan de Saintre being at sharp variance with the more colloquial style of the Fifteen Joys of Marriage or the Cent Nouvelles nouvelles. They convey the splendid inventiveness of the French authors, and the richly realistic descriptions in Le Petit Jehan de Saintre are rendered as clearly as the details in a Book of Hours miniature. The general introduction to this anthology discusses first the origins of the novella and then the formal aspects of these stories. It considers their prose style, their concern with plot of situation, their presentation of character, their emphasis on realism, and the themes most commonly treated; the novella as a whole is then briefly related to the subsequent development of the short story. An extensive bibliography follows this general critique. In addition, for each separate author or collection of stories, the translators have prepared specific introductions and bibliographies. The anthology is decorated with period illustrations.
