The author, a seasoned journalist, spent years gathering insights from performers, agents, and historians to reveal the fascinating history, organizational structure, and daily lives of these nomadic entertainers. Delving deep into the origins of the circus, the author traces its roots to the medieval traveling minstrels and gypsies. The book explores the unique social hierarchy within the community, with its complex system of guilds, agencies, and unwritten rules that govern everything from booking engagements to settling disputes. Thematic depth is achieved through detailed accounts of the performers' extraordinary lives, the challenges they face, and the camaraderie that binds them together. From acrobats to clowns to tamers, each artist's journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and the pursuit of perfection in their craft. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First English edition, translated from the French by A.P. Morton.Professionally rebacked including original cloth spine with title embossed in gilt and illustration of acrobat embossed in gilt on front board. Bookplate, "Arthur Derry. Nottingham 1865" on front paste-down. Text block is very clean and tight. This look at the cultural history of traveling performers begins with a preface noting that the original title was "Banquistes" and was changed because outsiders wouldn't understand it and those to whom it applies would consider it an insult. The book "describes the organization of the banquiste people, the foundation of its agencies, newspapers, and syndicates, it follows the mountebank from his birth in the wandering caravan to his apotheosis in the friezes of the circus. And at the same time it penetrates into the stables to explain the secrets of the trainer, the tamer, and the ringmaster; into the booths to ask the clown for the stories of his adventures." With 233 line illustrations, some full page. (Toole-Stott 445; Findlay 394; English Circus Books 49).
