Octavo, original laminated pictorial boards, without a dust jacket as issued. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the dedication page, "to Bryony - who is the most important person I've ever met in a signing queue & the first person ever to see merit in Harry Potter. With huge [underlined 4 times] thanks. J.K. Rowling." Additionally signed and with a large original drawing by cover illustrator Thomas Taylor. The recipient, Bryony Evens was one of the first people to read the opening chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first to recognize the workâs inherent value, and perhaps the most instrumental figure in getting the book published. Working at the time at Christopher Little Literary Agency in Scotland, Evens was the first point of contact in receiving and sorting unsolicited manuscripts. Evens read Rowlingâs submission of the first three chapters of the book and passed it along to Little, who approved that she obtain the full manuscript and promote it to suitable publishers. Given a small budget, Evens was only able to print three manuscripts to pitch to publishing houses and, after twelve months and twelve rejections, was finally given the green light by editor Barry Cunningham from Bloomsbury in London. Bloomsbury published the book on June 26, 1997. A year later, Bryony attended a Harry Potter book signing event where Rowling received her with open arms and warmly inscribed the present volume. Rowling was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International in 1990 when she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series while on a delayed train from Manchester to London. The seven-year period that followed saw the death of her mother, birth of her first child, divorce from her first husband, and relative poverty. A true "rags to riches" story, the publication of the present volume would bring her from living on benefits to billionaire status. She was named the world's first billionaire author by Forbes in 2014 and the Harry Potter series has become the best-selling book series of all time.     Condition: Very Good. First Edition, galley proof. EARLIEST KNOWN COPY OF HARRY POTTER; NO OTHER COPIES LOCATED. On February 26, 1997, this remarkable complete set of galley sheets was sent to the distinguished children's author and literary critic Fiona Waters. In the cover letter accompanying the galley (included here), Rosamund Walker, Children's Marketing Manager of Bloomsbury Publishing wrote, "Further to our conversation, I have enclosed a manuscript for your interest as promised. Once you've had a chance to have a look, I would really appreciate it if you could let me know your comments for pre-publication quotes." The "manuscript," already rejected by twelve other publishers, was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Waters read these advance galley sheets during a long train journey to Scotland and was immediately captivated by the tale of a young wizard named Harry Potter. While it was Ms. Waters' usual practice to discard galleys after reading them, she retained this one because she believed Harry Potter was a truly special and distinctive book. She wrote back to Bloomsbury Publishing with effusive praise, making a special point of noting that "There is something about Harry Potter that reminds me of Charlie Bucket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." In replying to Waters' letter, Rosamund Walker wrote that "I'm sure the author will be most flattered with the allusion to Charlie Bucket" - and indeed she was: for the statement was featured prominently on the back cover of the first edition. Historically significant, this is the only known set of advance galley sheets to have survived. It precedes the early June publication of some 200 bound proof copies as well as the first edition that famously appeared on June 26. Intended as they were for prominent reviewers, only a handful of such galleys were produced. Our copy belonged to a lead reviewer whose endorsement undoubtedly helped make the book the spectacular success it became. As Ms. Waters (who signed this galley on the first page) tells it, in recalling her first meeting with J. K. Rowling: "It was very shortly after the first book was published and I was invited to a party by Bloomsbury to celebrate it all. And when I was introduced to her [J. K. Rowling], she flung her arms around me and said, Oh, you are the lovely lady who gave me that wonderful review!" Note: By the late 1990s -well into the digital age of printing - publishers generally did not issue traditional galleys printed from a printing press, but rather printed a set of sheets from a file and copied them for distribution to a limited set of reviewers. Beautifully housed in full leather solander boxes as well as a buckram 'treasure chest' which holds all four books in place for easy and displayable storage. The set consists of: 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' (1997), UK uncorrected proof, published by Bloomsbury. One of only 200 proof copies printed 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', (1998), UK uncorrected proof, published by Bloomsbury. One of 300 proof copies printed 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' (1999) first state of the uncorrected proof, published by Bloomsbury. The front panels also bear the 'HP' acronym familiar from the film franchise a lovely touch. An amazing collection and unique chance to obtain the only four uncorrected proofs produced in the entire Harry Potter series. When Rowling published the fourth instalment Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2000) no proofs were issued as the publisher feared that the text could be leaked. This policy was kept for the remaining books as well and without any spoiler leaks kids and adults were queuing up bookstores at midnight of the respective publication dates in order to obtain a copy and start reading the continuation of the Potter saga. The uncorrected proofs contain a number of errors which were later corrected such as a J.A. instead of J.K. Rowling on the copyright page of the Philosopher's Stone copy. Nowadays J.K. Rowling is such a household name that nobody in the world would make such an error but back in 1997 Rowling was an unknown persona. This is one of these extremely rare latter copies, with a signed Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone illustrated bookplate loosely inserted. The latter is combined with a letter from J.K. Rowling's office. Printing number line: 10 - 1; Wendy Cooling quote to the front cover; '1 wand' twice on page 53; 'Philospher's' on the back cover; 'Wizardry and Witchcraft' [rather than 'Witchcraft and Wizardry'] to the back cover. No Dust Jacket as issued. Dedication with the date November 14, 1997, on the title page from parents to their 7-year-old daughter; below that is the name of the original owner in blue felt-tip pen. There are a couple of small dents to the front cover, and there is a small, light circular stain on page 84. For conservation purposes, the pages of the book have been made acid-free by a renowned conservator, from whom a certificate is issued. The lifespan of the book has increased fivefold thanks to this intensive treatment, protecting the pages from decay. In addition, Marchelma van Breugel, the worlds leading expert on modern paper conservation and restoration, did some minor restoration work to the covers of the book. The book is housed in a contemporary storage box with an inlaid image, lined with moleskin inside. The signed bookplate is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity (LoA) from Adam Houston (TheHarryPotterSpecialist), the world's sole J.K. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. Presentation copy, "For Jenny, who does believe in magic (I do too, really) (but donât tell anyone) J.K. Rowling." Also, with an original drawing of Harry Potter by jacket illustrator Thomas Taylor. The recipient, was the vendor's daughter Jenny, who was seven years old at the time, at the Edinburgh Literary Festival in August 1997. Jenny's mother wrote in her journal for that month "We all went to hear Joanne Rowling reading from her first children's book "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and were so impressed we bought a copy and Ms. Rowling signed it for Jenny. Jenny read "Harry Potter" first, then me and now she is reading it again so Peter has'nt had a chance yet! It really is a very good read". Rowling appeared in the Tepee Tent, the smallest venue at the festival, reading extracts of the book to an audience of less than fifty people. Jenny's mother recalls that "Jenny was aged 7 and very into wizards, magic, fairies and the like so when she took the book to be signed, she had a whispered question for Joanne Rowling - hence the inscription in the book." At the time of the bookâs publication in 1996, illustrator Thomas Taylor had just graduated from art school and was working at Heffers Childrenâs Bookshop in Cambridge. At Heffers, Taylor educated himself on the childrenâs book market and its major publishers and decided to submit a portfolio of his illustrations to the offices of Bloomsbury Publishing, including several drawings of dragons and wizards. The first applicant to the award for children's literature was J.K. Rowling. In 1996 Rowling received an £8000 grant from the SAC. Rowling later told the chairman of the Arts Council, Magnus Linklater, that the award "transformed her life by allowing her to pay for childcare during the whole of a year, it had allowed her to complete the second Harry Potter volume at a time when she had no prospects of success for the first" (Magnus Linklater, Prospect Magazine). The very well known error of 1 wand listed twice on page 53 along with the all important 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 number line listed on the copyright page and the missing space between Thomas Taylor1997. This is a stunning copy with no colour fading at all. There are no creases at all to the front and back covers but there is some very slight creasing to the spine. It has an incredibly tight binding, square with no shelf lean, a fine copy except for some very minor spotting to the half title page. This copy is clearly unread, with no internal inscriptions or writing of any kind. No dog eared pages, folds or creases to any of the pages.  Overall, an exceptionally beautiful copy that has clearly been very well looked after.

The inscription refers to Harry Potter character Ron Weasley's elder twin brothers and fellow redheads, Fred and George. Bryony Evens was one of the first people to read the beginning chapters of the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, the first to recognize the work's inherent value, and perhaps the most instrumental figure in getting the book published. Working at the time at Christopher Little Literary Agency, Evens was the first point of contact in receiving and sorting unsolicited manuscripts. Evens read Rowling's submission of the first three chapters of the book and passed it along to Little, who approved that she obtain the full manuscript and promote it to suitable publishers. Given a small budget, Evens was only able to print three manuscripts to pitch to publishing houses and, after twelve months and twelve rejections, was finally given the green light by editor Barry Cunningham from Bloomsbury in London. The boards have only a few very small spots of laminate lift (located just under the words Hogwart Express on the front cover, and lower front edge. The book has no edgewear but to the outer corner tips. The binding is tight with a slight bit of cant, otherwise the boards are in excellent shape for this title considering the very few hardcovers that remain were more abused and well-loved. The end papers are clean, and flat with no marks, no inscriptions, no book plates and no bookstore stamps. The internal pages are clean with an inscription on the title page dated in the year of publication, otherwise the pages are extremely clean and flat with but the common age toning. but no scribbles, no bent pages, no stains, no handling marks and no foxing except to the first two pages of the book.
