Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. "Clemenceau and the Third Republic", by J. Hampden Jackson, was issued in the admirable "Teach Yourself History" series published in 1948 by Hodder & Stoughton Ltd. under the general editorship of renowned historian A. L. Rowse. The publishers stated their intent on the dust-jacket: "The key idea of this series, and what distinguishes it from any other that has appeared, is the intention by way of a biography of a great man or woman to open up a significant historical theme. This book , by J. Hampden Jackson, is a study of the Third Republic of which Clemenceau was, in more sense than one, the central figure. To understand Clemenceau is to understand France. Not the whole of France; there are important aspects of the French tradition which were foreign to him: the religious and mystic France, the Roman and Gothic France were beyond his range. What he typifies is the prevailing France as the world has known her during the last hundred years. He had the essence of Republican France in him, as Churchill has the essence of aristocratic England." It's a very satisfactory read, and highly instructive, which is what Mr. Rowse intended with the "Teach Yourself History Series" - works of solid history and biography that one could enjoy, and from which one might derive an enlargement of one's knowledge. SERIES : Teach Yourself History Series SERIES EDITOR : A. L. Rowse TITLE : Clemenceau and the Third Republic AUTHOR : J. Hampden Jackson IMPRINT : Hodder & Stoughton for The English Universities Press PLACE : St. Paul's House, London DATE : (February, 1948) EDITION : 2nd Printing STATUS : OP - Out of Print Trade hardcover; has two bi-color maps printed on the end-papers; contains an Introduction, a brief bibliography and an index; [xiv + 266 pages; approximately 4 3/8" x 6 7/8"; beige cloth with title, etc. and decorative embellishment lettered in gilt on spine - publisher's name stamped on spine; end-papers printed with maps; printed dust-jacket; front flap has American distributor's label (Macmillan) CONDITION -- BOOK : VERY GOOD -- JACKET : NEAR VERY GOOD -- EXTERIOR : Board corner tips are bumped; modest wear to board edges (shelf wear to bottom); spine extremities are compresses and there is a touch of fraying to head; title displays brightly and the whole is clean and presentable. The text Block edges are toned but clean . BINDING : The binding is still fairly solid. INTERIOR - The end-papers are toned, else clean and unmarked; the bottom corner tips have been softly bumped through much of the book, else the interior is clean and presentable with but near-negligible signs of use. DUST-JACKET - Paper is toned, especially the spine panel - and the edges display small chipping and tears; front flap price-clipped (most likely by the American distributor - I posit this because of the oblique position of the distributor's label).
