Paperback. Condition: Good. The Mining Valuation Handbook is exactly the sort of book that announces, with magnificent confidence, that somewhere in this world there are people who not only discuss ore bodies and project economics for pleasure, but require a handbook to do so properly. And thank heavens for them, because civilis…ation, for all its apps and branding and artisanal coffee foam, still rests rather heavily on people digging valuable things out of the ground and then arguing in a highly numerical way about what those things are worth. Victor Rudenno?s book belongs to that noble category of volume which is far more exciting than its title might initially suggest. At first glance, it sounds like a brick of specialist seriousness designed to keep a filing cabinet from drifting. But look again, and what you actually have is a guide to one of the great modern acts of organised speculation: determining the value of rocks, holes, hopes, risk, machinery, metallurgy, markets, and the enduring human belief that beneath this particular patch of earth lies a fortune waiting to justify everyone?s spreadsheets. Because mining valuation is not simply counting nuggets in a bucket. If only. It is a glorious tangle of geology, engineering, finance, optimism, caution, and the occasional tendency for entire ventures to depend on assumptions made in rooms full of men pointing at diagrams. What is in the ground? Can it be reached? Can it be processed? At what cost? At what future price? In what political climate? With how much infrastructure? And, most importantly, how many decimal places are required before investors nod solemnly and agree that the thing is worth millions? This handbook, one imagines, enters that chaos with admirable discipline and attempts to bring order. There is something inherently theatrical about mining finance. On one level it is austere and technical, full of reserves, resources, feasibility studies, discount rates and commodity forecasts. On another, it is almost mythic: a wager on hidden wealth, buried promise, and the possibility that the earth itself might underwrite a balance sheet. Books like this sit at the exact point where geology puts on a tie and goes to meet the accountants. Which is a wonderfully peculiar corner of human endeavour, and one Crappy Old Books is delighted to represent. Published in 1998 by Wrightbooks, this volume hails from that excellent era when professional manuals were produced with sturdy pragmatism and no obvious need to seduce the casual browser. It does not need a thrilling subtitle such as How to Strike It Rich with Smarter Minerals . It simply assumes that the reader has come for actual knowledge and is unlikely to be frightened by words like ?valuation methodology.? There is something deeply reassuring about such confidence. A proper handbook should look as though it knows more than you do, and this one almost certainly does. As a Good condition copy, it has exactly the right sort of credibility. A mining valuation handbook ought not to look decorative and untouched, like a lifestyle object in a minimalist office. It should look as though it has seen some use, perhaps in the company of mining analysts, engineers, speculative investors, students of extractive industry, or anyone who has ever wanted to know whether a remote mineral deposit is a treasure chest or an expensive hole. A good copy suggests practical life. Marginal relevance. Real-world consultation. In short, character. There is also a special irony in books of this sort. They are profoundly material without being remotely romantic. Gold may glitter, copper may electrify the modern world, and coal may have powered empires, but the handbook is unimpressed by poetry. It wants assumptions tested, numbers justified, and risk weighed. It strips away fantasy and asks what the thing is actually worth. Which, in a civilisation increasingly devoted to assets of suspicious intangibility, feels almost noble. Here at last is a book concerned with dirt, depth, extraction and arithmetic. So The Mining Valuation Handbook is not merely for miners. It is for anyone fascinated by the strange marriage of natural resources and financial logic. It is a technical volume, yes, but also a glimpse into the machinery of industries that quite literally shape the physical world. Serious, practical, and faintly intimidating in exactly the right way, it is the sort of book that makes a shelf look competent. In short: a solid, specialist, faintly formidable guide to the business of deciding what buried wealth is worth before anyone has quite finished burying money trying to reach it. Crappy Old Books is proud, naturally, to offer this sturdy monument to geology, finance, and the ancient human dream that somewhere underfoot lies a very good investment.
