Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Mottled rose paper covered boards w/gold pasted spine label. Fragile paper boards show wear head and heel of spine and two corners, dampstain to spine and bulk of rear board, inner front corner. This dampstain tips the lower margin, most visably on rear endpaper. Text is otherwise clean and bright, light soil to closed outside edges. With illustrations from his private notebook throughout. "My dear Heirs: All of you have teased me so incessantly during my lifetime about not taking unto myself a wife that I have written from time to time, leisurely, since my sixtieth year, a little memorandum of my society with women. The ten episodes and conclusion herein related are the sum total of my intimate associations with them. So, weep not too bitterly, my dear heirs. Your Uncle Rene had a very pleasant time while living, though unmarried." (from a letter left with the memoirs).
