Synopsis: In "The Destructive-Labor Camps," the first part of this volume, we experience the terrible plight of the working prisoners, the cruelty and caprice of camp authorities, and the tragic fate of the women prisoners and the luckless children born to them. This chronicle of inhumanity is made bearable by the vitality and emotional range of Solzhenitsyn's writing that make his work on the "Archipelago" of Soviet repression one of the extraordinary literary events of our age. Translated into English from the Russian by Thomas P. Whitney. The Gulag Archipelago is a book by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn based on the Soviet forced labor and concentration camp system. The three-volume book is a massive narrative relying on eyewitness testimony and primary research material, as well as the author's own experiences as a prisoner in a Gulag labor camp. Written between 1958 and 1968 (dates given at the end of the book) it was published in the West in 1973, thereafter circulating in samizdat (underground publication) form in the Soviet Union until its official publication in 1989.

"THE GIFT is the last of the novels Nabokov wrote in his native Russian and the crowning achievement of that period in his literary career. It is also his ode to Russian literature, evoking the works of Pushkin, Gogol, and others in the course of its narrative: the story of Fyodor Godunov-Cherdyntsev, an impoverished émigré poet living in Berlin, who dreams of the book he will someday write--a book very much like THE GIFT itself." [publisher copy] "A fascinating lesson in the truly staggering number of possible ways of writing and seeing."--Kirkus Reviews.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First English Edition (NAP). This book is being offered at a significant discount due to one significant condition issue, the erosive loss on the half-title page (see photo). There is also one tiny spot of loss on the facing 'by Vladimir Nabokov' page. After that, the pages are in excellent condition, the issue does not recur anywhere. You can see the black covers in the photos. While there are no stains, there are some areas with a light whitish hue. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The spine ends have only mild crinkling. The cover edges are in very good shape, no rubbing. The same goes for the cover corners. The page edges look very good. The top page edge has a light orange tint. The middle page edge is deckled or rough-cut. They did a good job. The inside covers and end papers are mustard-colored. They're perfectly clean. The pages also appear to be perfectly clean. I have scrolled through them a number of times without finding any instances of soiling. I'm also not finding any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. I have detected a very slight musty odor. I'm a bit sensitive to that. The dust jacket is in very nice condition. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. There isn't any conspicuous soiling. I don't see any tears. The flaps are in excellent condition, clean, no tears or creases. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. 'The Gift is Vladimir Nabokov's final Russian novel, and is considered to be his farewell to the world he was leaving behind. Nabokov wrote it between 1935 and 1937 while living in Berlin, and it was published in serial form in 1938 under his pen name, Vladimir Sirin. The Gift's fourth chapter, a pseudo-biography of the Russian writer Nikolay Chernyshevsky, was censored from publication in the Russian émigré journal Sovremennye zapiski that published the book's four other chapters. The Gift is considered by some 'the most original, unusual and interesting piece of prose writing or of Russian emigre writing.' Also the most 'difficult' of Nabokov's Russian novels.'.
