Elle refuse donc de partir d'un objet construit, le Diderot que l'on connaît aujourd'hui. D'où une attention extrême portée aux lieux, milieux, agents et supports qui, diffusant ses oeuvres et lui en attribuant d'autres, ont organisé l'invention de Diderot. Deux espaces de réception ont ainsi été mis au jour, l'espace savant et l'espace du théâtre. Deux espaces d'abord, parce que chacun a sélectionné des oeuvres différentes de Diderot : pour le premier, des ouvrages comme les Pensées philosophiques, la Lettre sur les aveugles, et surtout, l'Encyclopédie et pour le second, le Père de famille, le Fils naturel et les traités théoriques de l'auteur sur l'art dramatique. Deux espaces ensuite, parce qu'ils couvraient des aires géographiques distinctes et étaient portés par des com-munautés intellectuelles et des systèmes institutionnels différents : les villes universitaires de l'Allemagne protestante du Nord et du Centre pour l'un, les villes de résidence catho-lique et protestante implantées sur l'ensemble du territoire allemand pour l'autre. Deux espaces enfin, parce que chacun disposait d'un mode de fonctionnement propre, c'est-à-dire de règles d'élaboration du savoir, de normes et de pratiques de critique spécifiques. Deux espaces, donc, parce que chacun a créé son Diderot. Privilégiant l'étude des modes d'appropriation sur celle des contenus, ce livre propose donc de nouvelles perspectives pour aborder les phénomènes de réception littéraire. ANNE SAADA, chargée de recherche au CNRS, est historienne de la « République des lettres » et des pratiques de lecture au xvilie siècle, notamment dans l'espace franco-allemand. Outre la construction allemande de la figure de Diderot, elle a étudié la constitution des fonds étrangers de la Bibliothèque universitaire de Giittingen.
