Reprinted from Volume XIII, Proceedings of the Pennsylvania-German Society. Illustrated by Julius F. Sachse. (illustrator). Good (some wear covers with very tiny stain rear covers; hingers cracked but binding still tight). Tall 8vo., green cloth, stamped in gilt, top edge gilt; 246 pages First Edition. Signed presentation on a front blank page: ?Presented to Miss Sadie Weidner by O. S. Kriebel.? Oscar Schultz Kriebel [1863-1932] was pastor of the Schwenkfelder Church in Palm, Pennsylvania. Sadie Lea Weidner [1875?1939] was born in Upper Milford, Pennsylvania and was an American missionary to Japan. She was involved in church reforms and was the founder of Mino mission in Japan. Atter several years in Japan, she returned to the United States in 1907 and visited local churches to introduce herself and ask for support of Miyagi Girls' School and its mission activity. It is probably during this time that she was presented with this book. The Schwenkfelder Church is a small American Christian body rooted in the 16th-century Protestant Reformation teachings of Caspar Schwenkfeld von Ossig [1489?1561]. A group of church members came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1731, and several migrations continued until 1737. The largest group, 180 Schwenkfelders, arrived in 1734. In 1782, the Society of Schwenkfelders was formed, and in 1909 the Schwenkfelder Church was incorporated. Enclosed with this book is a Sept. 24, 1911 dedication program for the New Schwenkfelder Church in Palm. Also, laid in are two vintage postcards of the church. Signed.
