First edition thus. Salesman's Sample Book for an Illustrated Collection of English Ruling Cases [Salesman's Sample Book]. Campbell, Robert. Browne, Irving. Jones, Leonard A. English Ruling Cases with American Notes: Sure Basis for Sound Argument. Boston: The Boston Book Co., [1903]. A salesman's sample book. Octavo (10-1/2" x 7-1/4"; 26.7 x 18.4cm). 32 pp. With 15 plates. Publisher's original textured black cloth, front board stamped in black with a framed border enclosing six inset portrait images, rear board with a single portrait image within a black-stamped frame, spine titled in black. Light soiling to cloth; minor rubbing to spine ends and corners. Faint price stamp and light pencil erasure to front pastedown, otherwise internally clean. A very good, interesting example of law book publishing and marketing history. $350. * Serving as a salesman's sample volume for the foundational 26-volume set of English Ruling Cases. At the turn of the twentieth century, the American legal profession was expanding rapidly, creating an unprecedented demand for English common law precedents. Because purchasing a massive multi-volume reference work represented an immense financial commitment for an individual attorney or young firm, publishers rarely relied on traditional brick-and-mortar retail. Instead, they deployed traveling book agents who visited law firms and courthouses directly. This specimen is a vital, well-preserved artifact of that itinerant trade, purposefully engineered to be light enough for a salesman's satchel while remaining visually striking enough to project authority and justify a costly subscription. The highly decorative binding featuring inset portrait miniatures of legendary jurists, was explicitly designed to catch a prospect's eye and visually anchor the prestige of the English bench. Internally, the sample includes the main title page, a selective curation of text leaves, fifteen high-quality plates, and localized marketing testimonials. Crucially, the prospectus highlights the "American Notes" provided by Irving Browne and Leonard A. Jones; two of the era's premier legal treatise writers, reassuring skeptical American attorneys that these English precedents remained directly applicable to contemporary U.S. courtroom arguments. The Boston Book Company further maximized the utility of the volume by using the e. First edition thus. (illustrator).…
