Seller: Main Street Fine Books & Mss, ABAA, Galena, IL, U.S.A.
Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff wrappers. 18pp. Near fine. Probable sole printing of this unusual sheet music "For Mixed Chorus With Piano Accompaniment" based on the Illinois poet's 1936 verse collection. On the front wrapper, in bold blue ballpoint, Raphling inscribes and signs: "To my dear friend Ralph / Best regards -- Sam / Feb 7 - 56 / N.Y." The recipient of this lovely piece was Ralph G. Newman (1912-98), noted Lincoln scholar and Abraham Lincoln Book Shop founder. Raphling (1910-88) was an American composer and pianist with an unusual flair for the literary; among other literary works he set to music was excerpts from Edgar Lee Masters' "Spoon River Anthology" and Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story "Mrs. Bullfrog." Most unusual item for the Sandburg collector who has everything -- or thought he/she did!
