2nd ed. Paperback small square quarto, very good condition, stapled, black & white & colour text-photos (paintings), faint foxing top edge, pages faintly toned, staples slightly rusted, cover corner tips slightly creased, white background covers little marked, minor edgewear. 52 pp. This exhibition catalogue is about the collection donated by Samuel Arthur Ewing in 1938 to Melbourne University. This is the second catalogue of the Ewing collection at the University: the first was published in 1938 to record the gift and the opening of the Ewing Gallery. The range of works by Hans Heysen in the Ewing collection is large, including a very early oil painting (Cat. no. 8) and eight works on paper from the 1900s to 1933. These are a good indication of Heyson's Australian landscapes as well as his work while in Europe at the turn of the century.

How are the central actors in the political arena supposed to gather the funds necessary to operate effectively on behalf of their chosen political ends? And, how may they spend money in furtherance of their political objectives? The aim of this volume, the first in a new series of Columbia University/London University collaborative projects, is to explore these issues in the specific context of a number of national settings. The studies presented here show that financing questions cannot be addressed independent of the constitutional conventions of the country, the nature of the political parties in the country, and the means of access to publication and the media in any given nation. The national studies in this volume reveal a rich diversity in the approach to regulation in Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, New Zealand, Quebec, the United Kingdom and the United States. The topicality of the issues considered is reflected in the fact that since the book was first mooted there have been major decisions of the US Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of Canada, as well as an investigation and report by the Electoral Commission in the United Kingdom, all of which have a direct bearing on the legal and policy issues discussed in this book.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 18 pp. Original wrappers. Very Good. First Edition. J. Ewing Mears's own book--Practical Surgery, Including Surgical Dressings, Bandaging, Ligations and Amputations (1878)--was dedicated to Samuel Gross. Here is the printed dedication on p. [3]: "To Samuel D. Gross, M.D., LL.D., D.C.L. Oxon., Professor in Surgery in Jefferson Medical College Whose Eminent Services as Author, Teacher, and Practitioner Have Conferred Honor upon His Country, His Profession, and Himself, This Book is Gratefully Inscribed by the Author." In his paper "The Old, and the Beginning of the New, in Surgery" (published in the journal Annals of Surgery in 1909), Mears writes about Gross's establishment of a surgical laboratory at Jefferson and the part Mears played in the laboratory: "In the days spoken of, at a later period, the eminent teacher of surgery in Jefferson Medical College, Professor Samuel D. Gross, organized, as a part of the instruction of his chair, a surgical laboratory, and the writer [Mears] was appointed to take charge of the department of surgical dressings, sharing the duties with a colleague who gave instruction in operative surgery. Later, the entire instruction in the laboratory came under the writer's care and the student received instruction in the laboratory, which was made compulsory, without extra fee. This condition the writer earnestly advocated, feeling that every student receiving the collegiate degree should be required to receive instruction of this character, and without extra cost. It is believed that the surgical laboratory, thus organized by Professor Gross, was the first established in the medical colleges of this country" (pp. 26-27).
