Published by London. George Newnes
Seller: Libris Books, Bristol, United Kingdom
Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. London George Newnes, c.1900 Seven Hardback titles from the Newnes Penny Library of Famous Books which were published to elevate the reading material available cheaply and to rival the Penny Dreadful series. Some books contain one volume and others 2; there is a total of 11 volumes in all. The first one was published in 1896. It is unknown whether this hardback bound set is in the original publisher s boards or not as nothing similar can be found online. They are attractive dark maroon and quarter black with a blind stamped design the length of the spine The black leather has rubbed away on many of the volumes to a moderate extent but this adds to their charm. The paper used for printing is cheap and pages are therefore darkened and flimsy. There were 177 volumes in this series. A new "number" (i.e. volume) was issued in the Penny Library of Famous Books every week. The size of each volume was Crown Demy-Octavo. There is a publishers device to the foot of each title page but there are no dates. The content of all books is clean despite being browned by age. There is an editorial note to the verso of the title page The titles in this set are: 55. Money-Seekers and Other Tales by Mrs. Catherine Crowe 73. & 74. Windsor Castle by William Harrison Ainsworth 88 Missing Diamonds; by Emmanuel Gonzales and Haunted Marsh by George Sand 92 & 93 Rory O'More by Samuel Lover 94 History of Caliph Vathek by William Beckford and The Anabaptist. A Tale of the Sixteenth Century by C.F. Vandervelde 101 Fireside Stories by Thomas Ingoldsby The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole and the Bravo of Venice by Monk Lewis The Indundation or Pardon and Peace by Mrs Gore. Please enquire if you would like to purchase part of the set. These titles are now scarce and their attractive binding makes them very collectable.
