Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. First volume in the new series The Science of Art, edited by the Scientific Research Laboratories of the Vatican Museums and dedicated to the research carried out on works of art in the Popes Museums which accompanies every research intervention.Available in Italian and English, the volume presents the results of an important diagnostic campaign performed on the Deposition by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, conserved in the Vatican Picture Gallery. The research is based on innovative multi-spectral techniques which enabled the analysis of the work from the surface through to its deepest structure: induced ultraviolet fluorescence, false-colour infrared, infrared reflectography, radiography and X-ray fluorescence for the study of pigments. The results are illustrated in an organic and rigorous fashion, but with a practical language accessible also to non-experts.Of particular interest are some of the details of the painting, invisible to the naked eye, that emerged as a result of the research: iconographic elements such as the entrance to the tomb, Christs hair, the fig plant; corrections to colour and volumes; and gaps and reworkings. The illustrations consist of numerous photographic recompositions, visible light and infrared images, microphotographs, diagrams and graphics. 'The Chalice of the Sienna-born Goldsmith Guccio di Mannaia, produced by commission for the Franciscan Pope Nicholas IV, is considered to be one of the masterpieces of medieval art. This monograph, available only in Italian, recounts its history, thanks to the contributions of experts and specialists in the sector and focusing on its complex restoration, carried out by the Laboratory for the Restoration of Metal and Ceramics of the Vatican Museums. The first part, edited by the art historian Elisabetta Cioni, retraces the art-historical background of the Chalice, through many comparisons and focusing on the Sienese Goldsmith's art in 13th century, a close critical reading of the iconography of the work, and an excursus on the artist and his stylistic peculiarities. Following, an in-depth examination of the inscriptions. The final section opens with a description of the translucent enamel technique, and goes on to illustrate the state of conservation and the restoration intervention. Finally, there is a summary of the scientific investigations carried out by the Diagnostic Laboratory, which also undertook experimental analyses. The high-quality set of images, enriched with 8 elegant folding inserts, documents not only the results of the laboratory analyses and the various phases of the restoration, but also highlights the singular features and details of the Chalice through previously unseen and spectacular macrographs. 'The Pauline Chapel, the private chapel of the Apostolic Palaces, built in 1537 at the behest of Paul III, has been reopened for worship with the solemn Vespers celebrated by Benedict XVI. This volume, available in five languages, accurately describes all the phases of the complex restoration works which began in 2002 with the preliminary scientific and archival research, and which have restored the Chapel to the best visual conditions possible, thus enabling a more advanced understanding of its historical, iconographic and stylistic value. Introduced by Benedict XVI's homily, which inaugurated the laborious restoration work carried out during the summer of 2009, and preceded with an interview with the Director of the Vatican Museums, Antonio Paolucci, the focus of the volume is the essay by Arnold Nesselrath examining the meaning and significance of the wall paintings (by Michelangelo, Lorenzo Sabbatini and Zuccari), revealing also the perfect coherence of the iconographic system with the functions assumed by the place. An art historical perspective is followed by an outline of the phases of the restoration project, faithful in its principles and intentions to the history of the Chapel. Maurizio De Luca then illustrates the methods of intervention used and Ulderico Santamaria presents the results of the scientific analyses. An appendix dedicated to the liturgical furnishings of the Pauline Chapel concludes the volume. Numerous images and tipped-in colour plates, linked to the essays, illustrate the development of the restoration works through images showing the chapel "before" and "after" intervention.'.
