Il commence à peindre en 1945 et à sculpter en 1949. Dès les années 1950, il expose régulièrement au salon de la Jeune Sculpture au côté de son ami Étienne-Martin. Il est très vite repéré et soutenu par le critique d'art Michel Tapié et le galeriste Rodolphe Stadler. La carrière de l'artiste dépasse les frontières françaises : aux États-Unis, il est régulièrement présenté par la galerie Mayer et Peggy Guggenheim achète même une de ses peintures sur velours. Dès 1956, il adopte le polyester stratifié qui deviendra avec les résines, ses matériaux favoris. Son inspiration est en grande partie issue de la littérature fantastique, notamment des romans de l'écrivain Lovecraft. Dès lors, il va s'attacher à sculpter des figures académiques à ses débuts, auxquelles succèdent rapidement des séries de bustes stylisés et un étonnant bestiaire, issus de son surprenant univers personnel, nourri par ses lectures, son intérêt pour la mythologie, les religions et son goût pour le fantastique. Ceux-ci se retrouvent également dans ses dessins, manuscrits, lithographies ainsi que dans ses linogravures. Durant plusieurs décennies, Jacques Brown a été présenté dans les plus grandes manifestations et a été considéré par de nombreux critiques comme un des artistes les plus doués de sa génération, voire le plus avant-gardiste.
