The popularity of these tiny boxes peaked during the reign of Louis XV (1715-74), when a controversial habit called snuffing, the inhaling of powdered tobacco, put elaborately designed tabatieres or snuffboxes into the hands and pockets of court society. Indeed, his notorious mistress Madame de Pompadour came to own a snuffbox for every day of the year, and violet scented portrait boxes were cleverly used to sniff out Napoleon loyaltists.
