The uniqueness of this book lies in the unconventional way in which the topics have been arranged. The author believes that the presented sequence of topics is more logical as it introduces the concepts of fluid mechanics building upon the fundamental framework of particle mechanics and tensor algebra. This book is meant for readers who wish to focus on acquiring sound understanding of the governing equations of fluid motion and the essential physics ingrained therein. Contents 1 Tensors 2 Mechanics: A brief review of the fundamentals 3 Description of fluid motion 4 Fluid Kinematics 5 Governing equations of fluid motion 6 Interaction of a flow field with a solid surface 7 Hydrostatics 8 Some simple representative flows of an ideal fluid 9 Some simple representative flows of a viscous fluid 10 Governing equation of motion in non-inertial reference frames About The Author Dr. Sawan S. Sinha is a Professor in the Department of Applied Mechanics, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, INDIA. He received his B.Tech. degree in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Kanpur (2001) and his Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University (Aerospace Engineering), College Station, Texas, USA (2009). Besides being a faculty member at IIT Delhi, his professional experience from the past includes working as an engineer for Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) during 2002 2004 and later as a post-doctoral Research Associate at Texas A&M University (2010-2012). Dr. Sinha has twelve years of teaching experience at IIT Delhi. Besides teaching courses on the fundamentals of fluid mechanics to undergraduate and postgraduate students, he frequently teaches courses on Engineering Mechanics, Turbulence and its Modeling and Computational Fluid Dynamics, as well. Based on students feedback, he has received Awards for Teaching Excellence at IIT Delhi (Turbulent Shear.

Contents: 1 Tensors 2 Description of fluid kinematics 3 Nature of turbulent flows 4 Random variables and their characterization 5 Governing equations of the mean flow field 6 Turbulence near a solid wall 7 Understanding multiplicity of length-scales in turbulent flows 8 Turbulence modeling 9 Scale-resolving simulations of turbulent flows. The purpose of this new book is to cover the most essential aspects of turbulence and its modeling such that the included contents can be taught at a pace and in a sequence that it becomes easier for students to learn the matter over a semester-long duration. The author believes that the sequence of contents, the volume of contents and the style of presentation included in this book are unique and apt so that students can make a very smooth transition from their already completed essential training in basic fluid mechanics to their next pursuit of learning advanced, complex but extremely useful concepts related to turbulence and its modeling. This book can ideally be used as a text book to teach turbulence and its modeling in a semester of 1214 weeks to the final year under-graduate/post-graduate students of Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil and other allied branches of engineering. By no means, this book is being presented or claimed as a substitute to any of the excellent existing books on the topic. However, this book can prove to be a useful stepping stone preparing a student to reach a stage where reading and comprehending other advanced texts and research papers related to this field of study would become easier.
