Leitend ist darum die gemeinsame Frage: Wie ist Identitätskonstruktion in Traditionen möglich, ohne dogmatisch zu werden, und wie können Relativität und Skepsis ihre produktive Funktion entfalten, ohne auf die Universalität der Werte (wie etwa der Menschenrechte) verzichten zu müssen?" - The book offers a far-reaching investigation into one of the most pressing philosophical challenges in today's globalizing world: how to navigate the tensions between inherited traditions and modern critical thinking without falling into rigid dogmatism or relativistic skepticism. It assembles leading voices in intercultural philosophy to reflect on the foundations and future of global intellectual dialogue. Structured in two major parts, the volume first addresses foundational questions of intercultural understanding. Essays explore the hermeneutic and epistemic conditions for dialogue across traditions, asking whether shared philosophical ground can be found without negating cultural specificity. Concepts like rationality, identity, and the "limits of understanding" are interrogated through comparative frameworks that juxtapose Western philosophical heritage with Islamic, Indian, Japanese and Chinese traditions. The second part focuses on case studies in comparative philosophy. These chapters examine how traditions such as Daoist metaphysics, Vedantic monism, Jewish rationalism and Islamic theology engage with core philosophical issues like the nature of being, unity and difference, knowledge and moral universals. Contributors explore the Japanese concept of harmony, Heidegger's influence in East Asia, and Maimonides' role at the intersection of Jewish and Islamic thought. Other essays build connections between figures such as Plato, Nagarjuna, Fazang and Nishida, probing shared concerns with emptiness, nothingness and the limits of conceptual language. More than a reflection on intercultural dialogue, the book proposes a new heuristic for understanding the dynamics of tradition and change. It challenges nationalized narratives of philosophy and calls for a transdisciplinary, transregional rethinking of what it means to philosophize in a connected world. With contributions spanning metaphysics, hermeneutics, political theory and cultural critique, the volume offers a valuable platform for scholars of comparative philosophy, cultural theory and intellectual history. By situating philosophical questions within global contexts and traditions, it makes a lasting contribution to the future of intercultural understanding.
