Questa biografia di Giulio Cesare scritta dallo storico e mercante genovese Stefano Ambrogio Schiappalaria (1515 ca. - 1581), nativo di Vezzano in provincia di La Spezia, oltre a ricostruire le principali tappe della vita e delle campagne militari del grande condottiero romano, dedica particolare attenzione al ruolo della città di Genova e dei genovesi e più in generale anche agli usi e ai costumi dei popoli vinti. âI genovesi, che ad Anversa erano considerati tra i più potenti e influenti mercanti italiani, fondarono nel 1536 la loro nazione mercantile e, grazie alla politica economica della Repubblica di Genova che finanziò cospicuamente la Corona imperiale, videro le loro attività favorite dall'ascesa al potere di Carlo V. Schiappalaria fu indubbiamente una figura di grande rilievo nell'ambito della nazione genovese ad Anversa, come dimostra l'allestimento del fastoso arco trionfale a lui affidato nel 1549 in occasione della visita in città del principe Filippo (futuro Filippo II). Come egli stesso specificò nelle pagine della Vita di C. Iulio Cesare (cit., pp. 459-463), alla realizzazione dell'arco, sontuosamente ornato con fregi, fogliami d'oro e scene dipinte corredate da iscrizioni latine, lavorarono circa trecento uomini e la costruzione venne terminata, seppur non completamente, in diciassette giorni. Nel settore mercantile le principali attività di Schiappalaria si devono ricondurre all'estrazione, alla raffinazione e al commercio del saleâ (Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, volume 91 - Voce S. curata da Myriam Chiarla).
