A pesar de su juventud nació hará unos quince años y casi simultáneamente en varios países, se ha propagado con vigo…r extraordinario, favorecida por circunstancias políticas y pedagógicas. En esta Iniciación, Brigitte Schlieben-Lange nos explica lo que es la sociolingüística desde dos ángulos: el histórico y el sistemático o teórico. Por un lado veremos cómo surgió dicha disciplina en Estados Unidos, Canadá, Inglaterra, Francia, Italia y Alemania Federal, si apoyada en tradiciones existentes o si de forma revolucionaria, y conoceremos los trabajos de investigación allí realizados. Por otro lado se nos presentarán picachos surgiendo de la niebla sus problemas teóricos y metodológicos en general. ¿Hará falta probarlo? Lengua y sociedad dos sistemas, dos instituciones se exigen y condicionan recíprocamente. Toda lengua refleja cierto modo de vivir, cierta cultura; toda sociedad adopta ciertas categorías lingüísticas para captar la realidad. Más aún: cada comunidad siente su habla como un símbolo de identidad frente a otras comunidades. Ahora bien, la sociolingüística considera la lengua no en el aspecto homogéneo y estático a diferencia de estructuralistas y transformativistas sino en el aspecto heterogéneo y dinámico. Le interesan, pues, las diferencias lingüísticas, bien sean regionales (dialectales), bien socioculturales, bien estilísticas, tal como ha indicado E. Coseriu. Atención especial se concede aquí a la teoría de Bernstein (ampliada por Oevermann) acerca de los dos códigos que él cree existentes en cada lengua: el elaborado (estrato social superior) y el restringido (inferior). A grandes y multiplicadas perspectivas nos asoma este libro. Como no podía ser menos tratándose de lo humano, algunas impresionan dolorosamente. Pensamos en las comunidades errantes, o en las marginadas, o en las tan injustamente tratadas que no se les permite usar su propia lengua. ¿Para qué dar ejemplos? En fin, la sociolingüística debe aspirar en sus investigaciones a no salirse del terreno histórico concreto (sería absurdo aplicar a otros países lo comprobado para uno solo). Razonable parece tomar por base una teoría de la actuación lingüística, la intercomunicación de los hablantes conforme a las mil situaciones del diálogo, la palabra viva. Educativamente, que los menos afortunados encuentren igualdad de oportunidades para su desarrollo espiritual y expresivo. La convivencia de cada día se asienta sobre la palabra y aun en la mayor soledad es la palabra nuestra infaltable compañera.
