Ähnlich einem Athanasius Kircher, der im 17. Jahrhundert mit viel Phantasie die ägyptischen Hieroglyphen zu entziffern geglaubt hatte, war der badische Freiherr von Schmitz-Aurbach fest davon überzeugt, das Geheimnis der etruskischen (etrurischen) Sprache gelüftet zu haben und sie als eine "uraltdeutsche" erkannt zu haben. Die F…achwelt enttäuschte ihn jedoch, denn sie reagierte trotz mehrerer Veröffentlichungen weder zustimmend noch ablehnend, sondern überhaupt nicht, wie er in der Einleitung zu "Zwei deutsche Inschriften" bitter vermerkt. Warum Grimm und Kollegen so zurückhaltend waren, bleibt unverständlich, denn an philologischem Tiefgang ließ v. Schmitz-Aurbach es wirklich nicht fehlen, wie an einem Beispiel aus "Ueber die Auflösung der hetrurischen Inschriften" belegbar ist: eine Inschrift auf einer Statue liest der Autor "duser her mena staruke", übersetzt "Dieser Gär meine Stärke (ist)" und überträgt den Text weiter in "Dieser Speer ist des deutschen Volkes Stärke". Selbstbewusst fährt er daraufhin fort: "Der Germanist, welcher nach diesen wenigen Beispielen noch an des Hetrurischen Deutschheit zweifelt, stellt sich in ein komisches Licht". - Papier etwas gebräunt, teils gering stockfleckig.
