Grey and silver illustrated paper covers covers have light bumping and creasing to edges and corners and moderate overall scuffing with a bit of the color scuffed off along the edges and spine. Color and black and white illustrations throughout. Rob Scholte (b. 1955 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch painter, sculptor, and graphic designer. His work is often characterized by its use of appropriation, irony, and paradox. He has exhibited his work internationally, and his work is in the collections of many major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. This is the exhibition catalog that accompanied Scholte's 1988 retrospective exhibition at the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen in Rotterdam. The exhibition, titled How to Star, was a survey of Scholte's work from the early 1980s to the late 1980s. The catalog includes essays by a number of art historians and critics. One of the most well-known works in the exhibition was Olympia, a copy of Edouard Manet's Olympia in which the naked woman is replaced with a wooden puppet. The work is a commentary on the role of women in art and society. Scholte's use of a wooden puppet is a way of suggesting that women are often seen as objects rather than as individuals. The exhibition also included a number of other important works by Scholte, including Faites vos jeux (Make your bets), a series of paintings that are based on the game of chance, and Triniteit. Pamphlet. Unpaginated unfastened pamphlet printed in raspberry violet and black on bright-white glazed folios. Maybe thirty pages. Huge item when folded-out to be read like a newspaper, each page 17x11.5 inches, illustrated with old cuts and exhibit photography, further texts by critics who hang with Scholte. Pressrun of this item was 15,000 cc. All leaves are covered with crimp-marks (item rather hard to handle, being so large) but we see no spectacular flaws. A good copy. Scholte digs the fine line between kitsch and the grander stuff. One gets a double vision of Scholte's canvases (he is expert as well as silly) and the petition he promotes, which urges an end to these biennials ("NO EXPO NO EXPO; No Expo 2000 a Venezia! ! ! ! Appello Internazionale", fearing that more crowding and tourism will put finis to Venice' fragile lid on its nasty lagoon environment.
