Doornspijk, Davaco Publishers, 1991. 134 pp. 105 ills (70 in colour). Orig. hardcover (gilt lettered brown cloth over boards), d./j. (The Davaco Collection). - - New copy !!Aart Schouman can be aptly described as one of the most neglected and underestimated painters of the eighteenth century. The explanation for this can undoubtedly be found in the fact that a great part of his oeuvre - painted wall-hangings and chimney- and doorpieces - were nailed firmly in place in the rooms and halls for which they were made, unintentionally relegated to obscurity. In the field of painted wall-hangings Aart Schouman had a predecessor in his fellow townsman Abraham Busschop, who was in his turn, inspired by Melchior d'Hondecoeter. After a short period in which he painted religious and mythological subjects, Schouman proceeded to make his most important contribution in this field: the many colored bird-piece, with indigenous and exotic birds and mammals. Many of these wall-hangings were removed from their original 'homes' and subsequently sold to collectors abroad or lost. Only one set was preserved for the Netherlands, acquiring a place in the Royal Palace 'Huis ten Bosch'.Schouman's two main channels of expression were painting and drawing. Of the large number of oil paintings he made, only a few have been handed down to us. Examples of his draughtmanship however, have been been preserved in superabundance. There are numerous depictions in Indian ink, watercolor, and gouache of animals (especially birds) and plants, as well as topographical views. In this last category Schouman may be called one of the first modern Dutch aquarellists.

Beautiful watercolour drawing of a Proboscidea louisianica by the notable and versatile Dutch artist Aert Schouman (1710-1792). "He was best known for his ornithological studies rather than for his botanical work, but the latter are so pleasing, with the plants in their pale, scenic settings that do not distract the eye"(De Bray). This species, native to Mexico and the southern United States, is commonly known under a variety of names, including devil's claw and ram's horn. It's named after its claw-shaped seed pods, that appear as its fruit dries and the flesh falls away, leaving a hard beak that splits into two horns. Both the fruit and the seedpod are depicted.Like most of Schouman's botanical drawings, the present is unsigned as it was probably part of the artist's private collection of study drawings auctioned after his death in The Hague on 10/11 December 1792. We like to thank the Schouman expert Charles Dumas for his information and confirmation of the attribution. In very good condition, with a small faint waterstain on top and a couple specks.l For Schouman: De Bray, The art of the botanical illustration (1989), p. 48; Nagler XVII, pp. 532-534; Thieme & Becker XXX, p. 270; Wurzbach II, p. 585. In passepartout (55 x 40 cm). Watercolour on laid paper (40.5 x 27 cm) of a flowering Proboscidea louisianica, with fruit and a horned seedpod on the ground.

ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR Late 18th Century (400 x 300 mm), Mounted, large gouache and watercolour painting of this duck. Schouman was a leading artist in Zeeland between 1735 and 1785. During that period he lived and worked in Dordrecht, The Hague and Middelburg and taught pupils in Dordrecht and The Hague. He travelled to England twice and assembled an important collection of paintings. He was a prolific and versatile Dutch painter, glass engraver, printmaker, collector and dealer, who produced still lifes, biblical and mythological themes, natural history studies, genre, historical and topographical works, portraits, sketches, etchings and mezzotints. The Mallard is a large and heavy-looking duck. It has a long body, and a long and broad bill. The male has a dark green head, a yellow bill, is mainly purple-brown on the breast and grey on the body. The female is mainly brown with a dark or an orange bill. Mallards breed in all parts of the UK in summer and winter, wherever there are suitable wetland habitats, although it is rarer in upland areas. In the UK, Mallards may be resident breeders or migrants - many of the birds that breed in Iceland and northern Europe spend the winter in the UK.

The Long-tailed Koel breeds only in New Zealand, where it is resident in the warmer months, from early October until February or March, sometimes April and occasionally later. The length of an average one-way journey from New Zealand to Polynesia is around 2500-3500 kilometres and thus travel over 6000 kilometers. For winter, the bird migrates to islands right across the southern Pacific. It is found year-round on the Kermadec Islands, the Norfolk Island group and the Lord Howe Island group, which are subtropical islands part way between the New Zealand mainland and the tropical Pacific Islands. The spread of its winter distribution is extraordinarily wide, stretching almost 11,000 km from Palau in the west to Pitcairn Island. Over most of its winter range, it is known by the indigenous name k?rewarewa (or local variations of this). In spring, the bird's routes of migration would almost certainly have served to guide the Polynesian ancestors of M?ori to find New Zealand.

Two turtle doves on a branch. Drawing in watercolour and bodycolour by Aert Schouman, executed around 1750. On the verso, annotated in Schouman's own hand: "het bovenste een tortelduyf, dank het wijfie van onse inlandts. en de onderste een kaaps tortelduyfje bijde levendig" ["The upper one is a turtle dove, namely the female of our native (Dutch) species; and the lower one a Cape turtle dove, both rendered in a life-like manner.]. With watermark of the Strasbourg Lily. Size: 36.4 × 25.5 cm. Aert Schouman (17101792) was an artist of remarkably wide range, but his international reputation rests chiefly on his paintedand especially his watercolouredbird studies, through which he secured a singular and exceptional position within art history. As far as is known, Schouman began making this type of bird portrait, such as the present doves, as early as 1734. He made them not only for collectors of drawings, but also for scholars and owners of cabinets of naturalia, who greatly valued his scrupulous and highly naturalistic treatment of proportions, contours, postures and colours. Schouman usually chose a very low viewpoint, creating a broad expanse of sky with subtly painted clouds. This gives the impression that the viewer is looking upwardan entirely natural perspective when observing birds. Over the course of the eighteenth century, interest in nature grew among an ever-widening public, including in the Netherlands. This curiosity extended to the exotic flora and fauna of overseas trading regions, from which interested professors, physicians, clergymen, merchants and government officials assembled natural specimens. As a result, numerous private cabinets of naturalia came into being. Schouman's watercolours were acquired by such collectors not only as autonomous works of art, but alsoindeed above allas study material for their own collections. In this drawing we see a Dutch turtle dove (Streptopelia turtur), together with "a Cape turtle dove". By this, Schouman is likely to have meant a pigeon (perhaps Treron calvus) 'from Africa', rather than specifically from the Dutch Cape Colony. This is a comparative study that cannot have taken place in nature. Exotic birds from Africa and Asia reached the Dutch Republic through the trading networks of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), with the Cape of Good Hope serving as an important hub. Within this context, such animals were kept, studied and depicted as objects of scientific curiosity and collecting culture, with geographically disparate species deliberately brought together in order to make differences in form, colour and origin visible. It is estimated that Schouman produced around 1,000 bird watercolours, depicting more than 240 different species. Writing about Schouman in 1842, J. Immerzeel observed: "The field in which Schouman particularly distinguished himself was that of birds. His birds are irreproachable in drawing, graceful and distinctive in posture and movement, downy, velvety, elegant or richly variegated in plumage. To this he united an ease of execution that testified to the certainty with which he handled both brush and pen. Nor was there any lack of connoisseurs who knew how to appreciate his work, and collectors gladly opened their portfolios to his finely worked bird drawings, executed with watercolour." Price: Euro 6.500,- (incl. frame).

From the cabinet of His Highness the Prince of Orange etca. 1779"). A watercolor copy of Frans van Mieris's self-portrait with his wife and two dogs at the Mauritshuis in The Hague (inv. #108; formerly in the collection of William V of Orange, the last Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic). NAUMANN records at least 10 versions (replicas) of the Mauritshuis composition. The latter was acquired by William V at the Van Slingelandt sale in The Hague on May 18, 1768 as lot 14 (LUGT 1683). A Golden Age interior scene, it plays with iconographical ambiguity (the man pulling the dog's ear) and a very haptic conception of textures such as the carpet fibers, the sheen of the satin and metallic surfaces. Aert Schouman was trained in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, and glass engraving. He studied under Adriaen van der Burgh (1693-1733) and became a prolific painter of genre and portrait scenes. However, he was especially celebrated for his plant and animal studies, as well as the "natekeningen," i.e., copy drawings which translated oil paintings into their watercolor counterparts. Auction catalogs suggest Schouman made at least two watercolor copies of Van Mieris' "Teasing the Pet.".

Schouman 1765 Inscribed verso: N 1886 Paper size: 6 1/4 x 9 1/8 in. Provenance: Property of a European family trust Aert Schouman was a prolific artist who specialized in flower painting and engraving on glass but was foremost in natural history painting. After training with F. Greenwood and Adriaen van den Burg, he became a master painter at The Hague in 1748, and three years later regent of the art academy. By 1762 he had been appointed principal of the academy and included among his pupils the great Dutch flower painter Jan van Os. Schouman was fortunate to receive royal patronage and completed many works for Prince Willem V at the summer palace of Het Loo, at Apeldoorn. The Prince owned a zoological cabinet and a menagerie that contained mammals, snakes, and birds from various parts of the world. Between 1765 and 1768, Schouman painted animals at Willem V's palace at Het Loo. Over one hundred drawings by him can be found in one of the few surviving complete recueils, the Vogel Broeck (the Bird Book). Moreover, Schouman's depictions of the animals housed in the royal menagerie and those of Simon Fokke formed the core of thirty-four treatises on foreign ani-mals, published between 1767 and 1787 by Arnout Vosmaer. Descriptions written by Peter Simon Pallas accompanied their illustrations. In this beautiful watercolor, the full range of Schouman's skill is evident. He forges a re-markable synthesis between a concern for scientific truth and the decorative and exotic aspects of natural history that were highly prized by royal and private clients. Loca: 6.3WCC.6C.
