I often hear in my current compositions a lot of things that I can hardly indicate'. Thus, in 1840, Schumann dedicated himself above all to art songs. Symphonies and chamber music works followed in the subsequent y…ears. Schumann wrote his 'Fairy Tale Pictures op. 113 for viola (or violin) and piano' in March 1851. An elegiac mood predominates in these four short character pieces. The four movements do not bear fairy-tale titles, but rather unpretentious tempo markings: 'Not fast', 'Lively', 'Quickly' and finally 'Slow, with melancholy expression'. Previously inaccessible, the autograph was consulted for the first-ever time for this edition, enabling us to clarify a number of questionable passages.; «Le piano devient trop étroit pour moi, dans mes compositions actuelles j'entends souvent quantités de choses que je peux à peine effleurer», se plaignait Schumann en 1838. C'est pourquoi en 1840, il se consacra prioritairement au lied. Au cours des années suivantes, suivirent des oeuvres symphoniques et de musique de chambre. Les «Märchenbilder» (Images de contes) pour alto (ou violon) et piano op. 113 furent composés en mars 1851. Ces quatre courtes pièces de caractère sont dominées par une atmosphère élégiaque. Leurs titres ne sont pas empruntés aux contes, mais sont de sobres indications de tempo : «Nicht schnell», «Lebhaft», «Rasch» et pour finir «Langsam, mit einem melancholischen Ausdruck». Inaccessible jusqu'à présent, le manuscrit autographe a été exploité pour la première fois pour la préparation de cette édition urtext. Certains passages douteux du texte musical ont pu ainsi être éclaircis.; 1838 klagte Robert Schumann: 'Das Klavier wird mir zu enge, ich höre bei meinen jetzigen Kompositionen oft noch eine Menge Sachen, die ich kaum andeuten kann.' So widmete sich Schumann 1840 vor allem dem Lied. In den nächsten Jahren folgten Symphonien und Kammermusikwerke. Die 'Märchenbilder op. 113 für Viola (oder Violine) und Klavier' schrieb Schumann im März 1851. In den vier kurzen Charakterstücken herrscht eine elegische Stimmung. There is NO American Edition. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Alfred Brendel's "The Lady From Arezzo: My Musical Life And Other Matters". His unapologetically and delightfully eccentric glance at his lifelong aesthetic passions as well as a summing-up of his career as one of the greatest pianists of our time. Alone among performing artists, Alfred Brendel was also a poet and an essayist of the first rank. That is to say, his writings have genuine literary value; they qualify as literature. The eponymous "Lady From Arezzo" refers to a beguiling and enigmatic mannequin that Alfred Brendel chanced upon in a window display in Arezzo, a small town in Italy, which he subsequently acquired. Who is this strange lady? Why is she carrying a large egg on her head? She conveys great seriousness together with quirky comic effect. In other words, she is the physical epitome of Brendel's own musical and literary essence. As such, the book begins with a brilliant, extended discussion of Dada, the most misunderstood movement of Modernism. Then, harking back to the Classical and Romantic Periods, masterpieces are re-appraised by Brendel, delving beyond performance towards their import and "affect", what they mean and the important context of their original creation and subsequent place in musical history. The "piece-de-resistance" is his summing-up essay, "My Musical Life", offering an insightful history of his stupendous career: "Music" rather than - more than - "Life", illuminated in a great essay. Alfred Brendel died on June 17, 2025 at the age of 94, his place in Western music and our larger culture preeminent and secure. An absolute "must-have" title for Alfred Brendel collectors. This copy is very prominently, beautifully, and uniquely signed, dated (shortly after publication), and inscribed in blue ink-pen on the title page by the author: "To John Alex, sharing music long distance, with all best wishes, Alfred Brendel, June 2020". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. His inscription refers mindfully to the COVID lockdown, which severely limited ("distancing") and in most cases, cancelled concerts as well as book signings outright, among other cultural events. This title is a great collection. This is the only such signed, post-dated, and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (British) available online and despite its imperfection (slight rubbing on black cloth boards: A publisher's flaw) is still in fine condition overall: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: During his long career, Alfred Brendel generously signed CD's and even Souvenir Programs. He did NOT sign too many books. Copies available online have very serious flaws ("Very Good") or are the Softcover Edition. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. Die Sinfonie war ein Erfolg, und Schumann war imstande, sie sogleich an das Verlagshaus Breitkopf & Härtel zu verkaufen. Allerdings übergab er das Werk dem Verleger erst, nachdem er erneut die Partitur überarbeitet und die überarbeitete Version in einer Sonderprobe im Gewandhaus am 13. Fantastic autograph musical quotation from the opening of the song Die Nonne", op. 49 no. 3, signed and inscribed by the composer: "Zur Erinnerung an Robert Schumann mit Grüßen seiner Frau, der es im Augenblick unmöglich zu schreiben [In memory of Robert Schumann with greetings from his wife, who is at the moment unable to write…] comprising the first sixteen bars, for voice and piano, notated in brown ink, on three systems of three staves each, with autograph heading, Die Nonne von Frohlich." Die Nonne" was written by Schumann (1810-1856) in 1840, his Liederjahr or year of song, and was published in 1844 as the third of the second volume of the Romanzen und Balladen," Op. 49. On verso is an autograph "Canone a Due," signed by Italian buffo opera singer Luigi Lablache, "Parigi 1. Aprile 1839. L. Lachache," beginning "Siamo in due che cosa far che cosa far." Of interest is the fact that Lablache (1794-1858) sang in Mozart's "Requiem" at the funeral of Haydn (1809) and of Beethoven (1827), and that Schubert composed and dedicated three songs to him.
