"In this thrilling record of an expedition to the unknown territories of Alaska and the Yukon, the author, Frederick Schwatka, noted explorer, geographer and naturalist takes us through a vast and uncharted region. At a time--the 1870s--when modern transport and conveniences were all but unknown, when communications could take months to reach the major cities of the United States and when dogs and sleds, bark and canvas canoes and travel by foot were the only means of transport through this great wilderness, this doughty crew survived storms, mountaineering dangers, unbelievable cold and more to chart their way ever-Northward into the unknown. Here are the stories of the wild when it was truly wild--of bear and caribou, seals and ocean birds, strange tundra and majestic mountains. This is a story of man against nature, yet of man completely in tune with the earth, sea and skies. Illustrated with the original engravings and maps, A Summer in Alaska is one of the great adventure stories of the American dream." -- dust jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. This was a school library book all about how children live in Alaska and the far north. It does have wear to the edges and corners of the cover, but it's all there. Inside, it has the school inkstamps and rules for library borrowers as a sticker inside front cover. Mended with black tape inside front cover. The binding is a little loose, but the pages are all intact. I found one with a small tear, and there's an overall "used" appearance to the pages, but not marked up or damaged.
