Add to basketHardcover. Condition: VG. None. 1st. This little book is the epitome of high country writing, with very personal and introspective accounts of experiences, impressions and impacts of the beauties of the NZ mountains. The title gives an immediate hint to content, but Gilkison's fondness for the mountains, the bush and the high co…untry is expressed here with freshness and enthusiasm. A number of his short poems complement the text. 120 pages, 10 b/w photos, few chapter end sketches. Book not dated, introduction and printer's note at back both 1940. Blue hard covers with black front spine titles VG with light wear to spine hinges, printed bookplate ( five alpine daisies with Scott beneath --- could this be from the author's library?) on front pastedown, obituary notice from Accountants Journal, Sept 1976 pasted FFEP, text block otherwise excellent. Photos (illustrator).

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: G+. Dust Jacket Condition: G+. 1st. Mount Aspiring, one of the highst of the great peaks of the Sourhern Alps, is also one of the most challenging climbs in NZ providing all the features that call for skill, endurance, fortitude and determination by those seeking to reach its summit --- all aspects drawing… the comparison with Europe's Matterhorn. Although Aspiring was noted and named by the Chief Suirveyor of Otago, J T Thomson, in 1857 it was five years before another exploration group climbed high on the mountain, not attempting to reach the summit --- that was not the remit of the Otago Provincial Geological group, led by Dr James Hector. Scott Gilkinson was not only an e[perienced mountaineer, (Aspiring among his climbs) but was also a writer on that subject, being associated with the publication "Moirs Guide Book" on Southern Alps climbing and "Peaks, Packs and Mountain Tracks" in 1940, which covered his own high country experiences. Thus, he was ideally placed to compile "Aspiring," an anthology including the history of the peak.linked with contemporay climbing activities and the development of mountaineering as a popular recreation. Fortyfive yeas after the Dr Hector party negotiated the lower slopes of Aspiring the first organised attempt to climb the peak was made by a party of esperienced climbers led by Dr E Teichlemann, but time ran out and no final effort to reach the summit was made.Three years after that attempt, in 1908, Aspiring was conqured by a party led by a British mountaineer, Captain Bernard Head, which reached the summit, staying only briefy as gathering storm clouds called for a quick descent. In 1913 a secend ascent was made by a larger party which included inexperienced climbers. After reaching the summuit this group was also forced to descend in haste, with high winds blowning and a storm appropaching. Then, World War I put a stay on mountaineering but interest in this recreation/sport incresed rapidly through the 1920s and the first seven years of the 1930s saw seven more summit sucesses. In addition to Aspiring's history Gilkinson's narrative examines the various routes climbers can take to the summit, he records the first rescue mission on the mountain involving an injured climber who fell over a bluff while descenting from the summit. This extended over several days owing to difficulties in carrying the casualty out on an improvised tent-and posle stretcher, down steep faces, over bolder barriers, across fast running streams before reaching some rough tracks on the lowe slopes. Meanwhile. two climbers were hurrying out to civilisation to arrange for medical assistance. Eventulay/y, the injured man was admitted to Cromwell Hospital, making a full recovery and retaining an interest in mountaineering. Mountaineering enthusiasts investrigated the practicallity of dropping supplies to climbing parties from aircraft. The ex[eriment was "not a complete sucess." One chapter pays tribute to the high country run holder who generally welcomed and provided assistance to mountaineers, while another deals with the :development of huts, tracks and camps, which today are accepted as part of the mountaineering adventure. They resolved many early difficulties of suopply, accommodation, establishing base camps and providing essential shelter when the wild weather, so often encountered in the mountain regions, struck. An interesting and informative account of the early days of NZ mountaineering. First edition of 1951, 80 pages including list early ascent dates/party menmbers. Illustrated with frontis photo of Aspiring summit, with 34 b/w photos through the text, three maps. Card covers have attched flaps with photos back and fiont, small cover section missing at spine base with chippinng along lower front edge. At some stage the book has been damp at the lower edge. This has left faint, smugdy shading to lower edges of several pages, particuly the early section. This is confined mainly within the liower margins and does noi impinge on te. Photos . Maps (illustrator).
