Seller: The Bark of the Beech Tree, Depoe Bay, OR, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. This erudite examination of English poetry (with chapters called "Science and the Modern Poets" and "Wordsworth and the New Democracy", etc.) starts off, in the introduction, on a pessimistic note, saying that with the death of Tennyson and Browning, and with no up-and-coming young poets on the horizon, English poetry was all but dead. Well, she was wrong! The copyright date in the book is 1895, which many will list as the publication date of this edition; however there is a short list of other works by Ms Scudder, all of which were published after this one, up to 1912, so 1912 must be the earliest possible date of this copy. There is minor browning to edges, slight wear to extremities, and a bookseller's label to front pastedown, but a very good copy indeed.

First Edition
hardcover. Dust Jacket Condition: no DJ. first edition. 12mo 349pp. from Introduction: "Science, democracy, and the past are the guides of modern poetry; but the knowledge of truth is its goal. In the Victorian age, it first becomes fully conscious of its quest, and its different stages may clearly be studied. [. . .] Let us study, then, the influence of science in all our poets; the new democracy, especially in Wordsworth; the early religious and social ideals, especially in Shelley; the power of the past in the poetry of reversion; the power of the present in the ironic art of Browning; the poetry of religious inquiry in its various phases; and finally the outlook of faith. So studying, we shall come to feel that the poetry of our age has a vital unity, and witnesses to an advance of the spirit, straight as the logic of experience, from doubt to faith and cheer." #01819.
