Cover Art: David Scutt (illustrator). 1st Edition. © 1988: A stand-alone novel by Arthur C Clarke & Gentry Lee. 1st edition, 1st printing:- Synopsis: Whales lie inexplicably stranded on a beach in the Florida Keys. Overnight a dozen whales, wandering far from their normal migratory route, have appeared from nowhere and beached themselves. More of the creatures are floundering in dangerously shallow water, while a contingent of local citizens and fishermen try to steer them back to the open sea. Local photojournalist Carol Dawson is sent to cover the story, and after some research identifies a small area of the ocean where, she believes, something must be causing the whales to panic and wander from their normal route. She hires a boat, and together with its owner Nick Williams goes out to investigate. At first their dive reveals nothing but a perfectly normal looking undersea trench running between two coral reefs, but then they spot more whales, moving aimlessly and sluggishly as if drugged; and when they go closer to investigate they see what looks like a large hole, with metallic-looking 'lips' in the ocean floor; and emanating from the opening, a set of marks that look like tank tracks. Carol Dawson and Nick Williams are about to experience te most momentous encounter in the history of the human race:- Review(s): "Once again Arthur C Clarke, the world's bestselling sf writer, has produced a novel in which surprises and marvels are unveiled with masterly skill; if anything, his collaboration with top American space scientist and writer Gentry Lee has given Clarke's work another dimension. Combining the tension of an outstanding thriller with ideas and revelations matching anything Arthur C Clarke has ever written, 'Cradle' is a masterwork of soaring visionary imagination, bound to prove as popular as such Clarke classics as 'Rendezvous With Rama' and '2001: A Space Odyssey'"':- (original cost £11.95).

Cover Art: David Scutt (illustrator). 1st Edition. © 1993: 4th in the 'Nicholas Linnear' series of books. 1st edition, 1st printing:- Synopsis: It begins in Tokyo with a phone call. Mikio Okami, an old friend of Nicholas Linnear's father, is in dire need of help. Many years ago, Nicholas promised his father he would come to Okami's aid should he ever need it. What Nicholas does not know when he accepts the call is that Mikio Okami is the Kaisho, the boss of all bosses of the Yakuza, the Japanese underworld. Okami possesses 'koryoku', the Illuminating Power, the sole path to a state of being that will allow Nicholas to explore safely the dark side of Tau-tau - the deadly psychic martial art - without being destroyed by it. In pursuit of this terrible secret, Nicholas must ply the tortuous canals of Venice, the back streets of Paris and, finally, the corridors of power of Tokyo. He will first become Okami's human shield, and then the sacrificial victim in a conflict of harrowing consequences. In America, Dominic Goldoni, one of the Mafia's most feared godfathers, is slain in bizarre, ritualistic fashion. Lew Croaker - ex-cop and Nicholas Linnear's best friend - is induced out of retirement to take this one last case, to solve a terrifying riddle. Is Goldoni's murder simply the beginning of a vicious blood feud between the Mafia's two most powerful families? Or is it the first clue to a darker, deeper mystery, an unthinkable alliance that involves not only the Mafia and the Yakuza, but also elements within the American government itself? Ultimately, the answer does not lie in Washington, where Nicholas himself is under scrutiny by a ruthless Japan-bashing Senator, nor in Tokyo, where the secret of 'koryoku' waits for Nicholas in darkness like a serpent ready to strike. It lies in the past, at a nexus point where ambition, greed and madness collide in an audacious scheme that spans decades. These two men - Eric Lustbader's most popular and enduring hero, Nicholas Linnear and his friend from 'The Ninja' and 'The Miko', Lew Croaker - are pitted against the most potent forces they have ever faced in an epic novel that continues Lustbader's incisive explorations of the dark side of the human mind, the effects of power on personal relationships, and the growing repercussions of the new world order in the 1990s. 'The Kaisho' is bullet-fast reading, a brilliant excursion into adventure and romance, intrigue and sex, providing a feast of insights into the mysteries of the Oriental mind:- (original cost £14.99).

Trade Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Cover David Scutt (illustrator). Paperback First Edition. 307pp + 10pp reproductions of documents. Unused, unread book, with bump at base of spine and sundry other minor edge-bumps. Internally as new, no owner's marks. Daniloff's arrest by the KGB in Aug1986 in retaliation for a US arrest, made news headlines around the world, but had deeper roots than generally realised. His many-great grandfather had also been a prisoner of the State, in Imperial Russia. The book weaves an intriguing double narrative of the two stories. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket by David Scutt (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with full number line. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, IN BLACK PEN, WITHOUT DEDICATION, ON TITLE PAGE. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, some very slight yellowing to page block, corners very slightly bruised, faint vertical crease to jacket on spine, not price clipped (£14.99), no other inscriptions, original publisher's bookmark tipped in, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 349pp. In the villages and on the mountains of County Tyrone, in the heartland of the Provisional IRA's most active Brigade, the golden rule is 'Hear nothing, see nothing, know nothing'. To collaborate with British Intelligence is to invite an inescapable death sentence. But there is word on the mountain that inside the Brigade there is a 'tout', an informer. He will be identified, interrogated, tortured, then hooded and shot. Gary Brennard, the MI5 field agent, and Parker, who runs the informer, have to protect their man at all costs: he is the critical asset to hold on to until the stakes are high enough and if the innocent step into the crossfire, that's just bad luck. Scarce signed. Signed by Author(s).

David Scutt (illustrator). Published by Scholastic, London; 2001. 8vo. 1016pp. First edition, first impression. Condition: Fine/Fine. Signed by the illustrator to the half-title. First edition of the three books published in one. This book is in exceptional condition. Bound in original black cloth binding, with title in gilt to the spine. The binding is square and tight, and in immaculate condition. Inside, the pages are beautifully clean and bright, free from blemishes and damage, and the book appears unread. The book is signed and stamped by the jacket illustrator to the half-title page. This stunning book is housed in its equally smart, first issue dust jacket. It is also in excellent condition, unclipped and free from marks or damage. It is housed in a plastic sleeve for protection. In all, this is a beautiful example of this first edition; it is a rare and unique find in exceptional, collectible condition. It is a must-have for any collector of modern classic children's firsts. Pullman began writing 'His Dark Materials' trilogy in 1993, releasing 'Northern Lights', the first instalment, in 1995. It won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. 'The Amber Spyglass' won the Whitbread Book of the Year in 2001. In 2003, the BBC's The Big Read poll ranked it at number 3. Following the success of the three instalments, they were published in this single volume in 2001. 'Northern Lights' was translated to the big screen in 2007 as 'The Golden Compass', and the BBC broadcast a tv series based on the trilogy from 2019 and 2023. The trilogy is marketed for young adults, although Pullman has stated he did not write it with a specific audience in mind. The fantasy series is critically acclaimed and functions in part as a retelling and inversion of John Milton's 'Paradise Lost', with Pullman commending humanity for original sin, which Milton perceived as its most tragic failing. There was some controversy over the trilogy and its criticism of religion, but in spite of that, by 2024 more than 22 million copies have been sold in 50 different countries, and it has been translated into 40 different languages. This single volume first edition is truly a rare find to be treasured by any collector, made particularly special for being signed and stamped by the jacket illustrator to the ffep.
