The buildings portrayed in this book date from the mid 19th to the early 20th century and reflect cultural influences and building techniques indigenous to British Columbia. Dangelmaier's work moves beyond weathered facades and sagging beams, the stuff of conventional architectural art. His paintings exude a sense of place and time.They capture the spirit of an architecture that is as much a part of a culture as it is a part of the landscape. The first (1979) edition of this volume had a different set of city heritage advisers. The above authors are more `worker-bees' than true authors. Read more about : W. J. Pendray's Soap Works, House of All Sorts, cost over-runs, shingle, arts-and-craft, verandah, half-timbering, Tudor Revival, and Biggerstaff Wilson House. The locale is British Columbia's city of Victoria. Excellent b/w photographic illustrations. Some location maps in brown tones, as are the architectural details drawings - think : dormers, gingerbread and the like. Cond : Paper wrapper is rusty brown with white lettering. Cover photo is from c. 1888 and is of a house on Fort Street. Volume is clean and square and w/o marks. No names . Excellent refernce ! !
